ALBERTON -- Brooklyn P.E.I. resident Jeff Ellsworth picked up the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award Sunday in helping the Hill United First Nations Chiefs claim the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Men’s International Fastpitch tournament championship in Orlando, Florida.

Islanders Jeff Ellsworth, left, and Morgan Murphy proudly display the championship trophy they helped Hill United Chiefs win at the AAU men’s International Fastpitch tournament in Orlando, Florida. The tournament was played Thursday to Sunday at Walt Disney World Resort and featured 24 teams. Ellsworth was named tournament MVP for a fifth time.

There were two Islanders on the team, Ellsworth, who is nearing the end of his competitive career and up and comer Morgan Murphy, 21 from Rustico. Murphy played in five of the games as a pinch runner. He also did some fielding and had a 1-2 summary with a sacrifice fly and an RBI in three at-bats.

He said the experience was one he’ll never forget.

“I’ve never played with such a professional and close group,” he relayed via text. He was thrilled with the opportunity to be a teammate to such players as Ellsworth, Nick Shailes and the tournament’s top pitcher, Adam Folkard. “Not only do you learn things skills wise, but they teach you how to be a professional and how a championship team wins.”

The Chiefs breezed through the 24-team tournament at Walt Disney World Resort undefeated, outscoring the opposition 58-8 through seven games. They beat Team Marques from Mexico, 8-1 in the championship final. The Chiefs played Team Marques in their first Pool D game of the tournament, winning 4-1.

Their only nail-biter was in their quarter-final game against 2014 tournament finalists, the New York Gremlins. They won that game 2-1, avenging a 5-2 loss to the Gremlins in last year’s quarter-final.

This was Ellsworth’s tenth trip to the AAU tournament and the fifth time he’s won tournament MVP honours. He hit nine for 14 this year, including four home runs.
