Shawn Williams dad passes - Edward (Ted) B. Williams

May 5, 2015

Ottawa, ON

From Shawn:

On Saturday, May 2nd, we lost a terrific man. A warm hearted giving soul who cared so much for others.

Edward (Ted) Williams, my Dad, has passed away.

Dad may have only had a Grade 10 education but he had the mind of a person with a PhD.

Dad always put others first. He was a person dedicated to service. Service to his family, his church, his country and his community. Dad was a proud veteran of the RCAF and CAF (1951-74). He served with distinction and honour. And he never forgot other serving our country. I'm most proud of the fact that Dad raised over $40,000 to be changed into Tim Horton's cards to be sent to Afghanistan to be distributed to the women and men serving in Khandahar where there was a "Timmy"s on the base.

Dad was in love with my Mom, Bev and took his 15 year old bride to Fontainebleau, France in 1955 where I often said they had a four-year honeymoon. Two kids travelling the world together and learning about life. Dad told me that after Mom passed away, he would talk to her every night. He truly loved her.

Dad always put the family first. When he was transferred from Sept-Iles, QC at the mouth of the St. Lawrence to Comox, BC on Vancouver Island, instead of the quick route of flying by military transport, Dad knew that he could save money by going by car and saving the per diem and stay with friends and family as we crossed Canada in 1967, our country's Centennial Year. As a result, my sister Cindy and I got to see the Big Nickel in Sudbury, the Canadian Plains, the Calgary Stampede, Jasper Park and the Columbia Ice Fields, all because of parents who cared about their family.

When Dad was posted to Hamilton he took leave (military vacation) at Christmas to be an auxiliary postal delivery person for two weeks. It was all to ensure his family had a wonderful Christmas with lots of present from Santa under the tree.

When I was in college in Toronto and Mom and Dad were having a tough time paying a mortgage with 19% interest rates, when I was down to my last dollar, suddenly an envelope would arrive in the mail with a cheque for $50. Dad was always thinking of others.

He will be so dearly missed.

Love you Dad.
