Junior Women’s National Team
Moves to 4-0 at Canadian Open

(Surrey, BC) The Canadian Junior Women’s National Team won two more games on Wednesday, defeating the Calgary Kaizen 4-1 before beating the White Rock Renegades 99 team 10-3 in five innings to improve its record to 4-0 at the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship. Against the Kaizen, the Canadian bats were held in check for good part of the game before the red and white was able to score twice in the fifth and add two more in the seventh by taking advantage of several errors with the pitching staff limiting the Kaizen to only two hits. Team Canada scored in each of the game’s five innings against the Renegades.

In the first game, both teams were held without a hit over the first three innings as Canada’s Madison Hope (Winnipeg, MB) and Kaizen pitcher Morgan Rackel went pitch for pitch. The red and white got a pair of two-out singles by Holly Speers (Surrey, BC) and Taylor Lundrigan (Abbotsford, BC) in the fourth but a ground out ended the inning. The following inning, pinch-hitter Kelsey Jenkins (Delta, BC) hit a one-out single and scored when Mary Martin (Winnipeg, MB) hit a fly ball to left that was misplayed for an error, with Martin reaching third on the play. Maude Sigouin (Laval, QC) grounded out to first to allow Martin to cross the plate and give Canada a 2-0 lead.

The Kaizen was able to plate a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead in half, but Canada added two insurance runs in the seventh. Emma Entzminger (Victoria, BC) reached on an error, moved up to second on a ground ball and to third when Elizabeth Murphy (Maple Ridge, BC) also reached on an error. Callum Pilgrim (Abbotsford, BC) singled to score Entzminger, and Murphy came in to score when Speers singled to left and the outfielder made an error on the play.

Hope started the game in the pitcher’s circle and threw the first four innings, allowing only one hit and hitting one batter while striking out four. Ashley Penney (Victoria, BC) pitched the last three innings in relief, allowing one unearned run on one hit. Speers had a pair of singles for Canada, with Brielle McCullough (Saskatoon, SK) hitting a double and Pilgrim, Lundrigan and Monaghan each chipping in with a single.

Against the Renegades, Team Canada opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Julianna Waldner (Altona, MB) drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a single by Alisha Welch (Langley, BC), to third by tagging up on a fly out to centerfield by Speers and scored on a single to right-center field by Entzminger. The Renegades got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a walk, a passed ball and a pair of wild pitches to tie the game. In the second, Lundrigan led off with a single, was sacrificed over to second by Becki Monaghan (Spruce Grove, AB) and scored on a double to left by Jenkins to give Canada a 2-1 lead.

The Renegades fought back with two runs in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead, but Welch led off the bottom of the third with a triple followed by an error and a walk to load the bases. Lundrigan singled to score Welch, followed by a run-scoring single by Martin and a sacrifice fly to left by Sigouin as Team Canada added three runs to regain the lead, making the score 5-3. Canada added two more runs in the fourth when Welch and Speers started the inning with singles before Entzminger also singled to score Welch from second and Speers later scored on a single by Lundrigan.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Junior Women’s National Team put the game away by adding three more runs to end the game on the run rule. Waldner, Welch and Speers all walked to load the bases with one out, and Entzminger, Pilgrim and Lundrigan each hit one-run singles to finish the game with Canada taking the 10-3 win.

Desirae Villanueva (Surrey, BC) started the game in the pitcher’s circle, allowing three runs on one hit but walked six batters and struck out two in two innings and a third. Madison Clarke (Edmonton, AB) pitched the final two and two third innings, giving up only one hit and striking out three. Lundrigan went 4-for-4 with four single and three runs batted in for Canada, while Welch went 3-for-3 with a triple, two singles and a walk and scored three runs. Entzminger contributed three singles, a walk and drove in two, with Jenkins adding a double and Speers, Pilgrim and Monaghan each getting a single as Canada produced 14 hits.

Team Canada (4-0) will close out its preliminary round schedule with a game against the Arizona Roadrunners (0-3) at 3:30pm PDT today.
