Junior Women’s National Team Remains Perfect at Canadian Open

Junior Women’s National Team
Remains Perfect at Canadian Open

(Surrey, BC) The Canadian Junior Women’s National Team kept its perfect record intact at the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship by defeating the Arizona Roadrunners 10-0 in three innings on Thursday. Elizabeth Murphy (Maple Ridge, BC) fired a no-hitter, while the offence scored eight runs in the bottom of the third inning to end the game on the run rule.
 
In the first inning, the Roadrunners got two runners on base on errors but was unable to score. In the bottom of the inning, Alisha Welch (Langley, BC) led off with a single but was quickly retired on a double play, followed by a triple by Emma Entzminger (Victoria, BC) but the next batter flew out to center. The Roadrunners went down in order on three pop outs on the infield in the top of the second before Canada opened the scoring in the bottom of the inning. Taylor Lundrigan (Abbotsford, BC) led off with a single and was sacrificed all the way to third by Callum Pilgrim (Abbotsford, BC) before scoring on a single by Murphy. After a passed ball moved Murphy up to second, Mary Martin (Winnipeg, MB) hit a run-scoring single as Canada took a 2-0 lead.
 
Team Canada exploded for eight runs to end the game on the run rule in the bottom of the third. Entzminger got things going with another triple and scored on a double by Brielle McCullough (Saskatoon, SK), followed by a single by Lundrigan and a walk to Pilgrim to load the bases. Courtney Gilbert (Delhi, ON) singled to score McCullough from third and Lundrigan scored on an error by the left fielder on the play. Martin pushed Pilgrim and Gilbert in to score by reaching on an error and stole second base before advancing to third when Welch reached on a fielder’s choice. Maude Sigouin (Laval, QC) hit a sacrifice fly to score Martin, followed by a single by Entzminger to score Welch from second. McCullough reached on an error before Lundrigan hit a two-run double to give Canada the 10-0 win.
 
Murphy struck out two batters over three innings of work to earn the win in the pitcher’s circle. Entzminger led the offence with a pair of triples and a single while Lundrigan picked up a double and a pair of single with two runs batted in. Welch collected a pair of singles, McCullough had a double and Murphy, Gilbert and Martin each contributed with a single.
 
The win improved Canada’s first-place record in Pool A to 5-0 heading into the playoff round. They will face the San Diego Renegades (2-3) in their first playoff game at 10:30am PDT today.
