World Fastball Invitational - Monkton 2009 – Brian Baillie – May 14

Blue Crew - Monkton 2009

OPENING DAY – THURSDAY, JULY 2, 2009

  Thursday – 7:15pm Opening Ceremonies

MC Brian Baillie moved the ceremonies along in typical crisp Monkton style, thanking his hard working tournament committee.
Brian introduced Larry Lynch in a short ceremony to honour yours truly, which I greatly appreciated, especially since we could keep it short and sweet.
Brian paid a very special tribute to our friend in blue who passed away on Monday, Lloyd Poirier of Nova Scotia – a moment’s silence followed.
The local MPP said a few words.
Ian MacDonald, the president of Steelback Breweries said a few words and threw out the first pitch.
Both teams were introduced and then it was time to play ball.
Some of the fans were here at 8am to set out their lawn chairs, others checked in last night. There was a good crowd in attendance.

2009 AWARDS:

The Kitchener Hallman Rivershark Twins are the 7th Annual Monkton World Fastball Invitational Champions

Top Batter:  Paul Walford

Top Pitcher:  Lucas Mata

MVP:   Craig Crawford

3:00PM

Prior to the exhibition game the Black Sox performed the Haka for the first time this weekend.
Traditionally they perform it only when playing another international team but today they did it for a very special reason.
They performed it to honour their old friend Paul Walford who had just competed in the championship game and had
won the Top Batter Award for the Monkton tournament.
Each team member also embraced Paul and did the traditional Kiwi nose rub.
This was a very emotional event to witness. Everyone mentioned the goose bumps they experienced.

I had the opportunity to congratulate Paul Walford after this moving ceremony as he left the ball park and he said he was very
moved by this honour from his mates.
