It started to “spit” a few times and the skys grew darker but the rain held off until the mercy was in place.

C: Chris Shewfelt

LP:

Gerald Muizelaar:                     4.1 IP, 5R, 5ER, 6H, 3K, 4BB

Adam Folkard:                         0.2 IP, 2R, 2ER, 2H, 1K, 2BB

C: Frank deGroat

For Kitchener:

Jody Eidt, a towering home run in the 5th

Evan Boyd 2 singles

Bill Simmons drove in the winning mercy run in the B5, making it 7-0 and an escape from the threatening lightening storm and rain that had been moving in through the game.

Kitchener scored 4 runs in bottom of the 2nd inning, and almost made it 5, but for a close call at the plate.

Bill Simmons hit a hard single in the bottom of the 5th to drive in the 7th run to make it a mercy.

A one hit game for Todd Martin, with five walks given up to this big team from NYC.

Usually a 7-0 score, especially a mercy indicates a lop sided game, I did not feel this one was that way at all. Kitchener scratched out every run the hard way, nothing came easy, a lot of singles, some lucky bounces, some bloopers by Patsy’s, but gritty ball game for the Twins who thoroughly entertained the partisan crowd with this one.

Kudos to home plate umpire Jay Hart on this one, its tough enough keeping tabs on two top level teams like this but Jay also had to contend with a rain storm, then a lightening storm. Keeping a cool head he had the score keepers doing double duty counting the time between heavy lightening flashes in the east and the time it took for the thunder to sound. Everyone did their best to make sure this was an official game in case it was called due to weather. Jay stopped the game twice for about ten minutes each until the rain slowed down, constantly keeping an eye on the approaching lightening. At no time did it come close enough to call it, but it was getting close and then finally the extra two runs by Kitchener in the B5 put a lid on it, a 7-0 mercy in five innings.

A good sized crowd stuck it out and enjoyed an exciting game.
