For the first time in the 10-year history of the event, the World Series of
Fastball championship trophy is staying north of the border.
The Orillia Quaker River Sharks became the first Canadian-based team to win the
coveted championship when they defeated Patsy’s of
“It’s always nice to win,” River Sharks second baseman Blair Ezekiel enthused.
“That team we just faced (Patsy’s) and these teams all weekend, they are the
top teams in the world. Some are ranked in the top five, so to come out and
take this tournament is big for our club.”
Ezekiel helped power the River Shark offence, belting two solo home runs in the
championship game en route to being named the tournament’s most valuable
player.
Afterwards, he played down his contribution, preferring instead to focus on the
team’s achievement.
“Accolades are nice but as long as we get the win and the team does all the
right things.
..that’s the main thing,” he said. “I’m
just glad that we won and that I was able to contribute...”
The River Sharks built an early 2-0 lead, and appeared to be in complete
control as Orillia starter Frank Cox mowed his way through the Patsy’s lineup.
Of the eight batters he faced to start the contest, Cox struck out seven and
induced a weak fly-ball back to the mound to record the eighth out.
However, Cox experienced some tightness in his pitching shoulder and, after
conceding a solo home run followed by a walk, was forced to leave the game.
“I’d hurt myself a little bit warming up for the first game this morning,” he
said. “I was trying to throw with something a little bit extra ... I wanted to
give my team a shot to win.”
Ryan Brand came in for the injured Cox and picked up where his teammate left off, holding Patsy’s scoreless for the remainder of the
game.
“We pitch as a committee,” Brand said. “Frank (Cox) is our main guy but we have
to step it up and fill in the spots where we have to and where we can. When
there’s an injury, you have to step it up.”
The River Sharks gave their pitcher some additional run support as
centre-fielder Ryan Wolfe came around to score on a fielder’s choice in the
bottom of the third and then Ezekiel and third baseman Glen Ormsby
hit solo shots to round out the scoring.
The World Series of Fastball championship helped validate the hype surrounding
the River Sharks, who entered this season as the International Fastball
Congress’s No. 1 ranked team.
“Being ranked No. 1 right out of the gate is tough,” Brand said. “We stumbled a
bit in the last big tournament but we got right back on the horse. Right back where we should be. Right on top.”
The River Sharks advanced to the championship game courtesy a 6-0 win over the
The playoff round was expanded from six to eight teams after rain forced the
cancellation of all but two games scheduled for Saturday. But despite the wet
weather a day earlier, the fans came out in droves Sunday to see who would be
crowned champion.
“The crowds were amazing,” Ezekiel said. “I’ve never been to a tournament where
the crowds are this big, even at the World’s. Of all the games I’ve played,
this is the most people I’ve seen out to a championship game.”
Added River Shark vice-president and tournament organizer Paul Barnetson, “Today we came in not knowing if we’d get any
fans coming back into the park and, in all honesty ... we may have had our best
Sunday ever.”
The River Sharks will now shift their focus to the ISC’s
World Tournament scheduled for Aug. 10-18 in
“Now we’ll go through the next couple of hoops and work towards the World
Championship,” Barnetson said.
said. “We’re one step closer.”

10th Annual World Series
of Fastball
With under
24 hours to go until the first pitch is thrown at the 10th Annual World Series
of Fastball the park is taking shape. The stands are in place, all the
fencing is complete, the tents are up and the diamonds look absoulutly great. All that remains is all the last
minute things that will have our entire committee running around all day Friday
to make sure that every little detail is looked after.
The World Series of
Fastball has always had the reputation as one of the most difficult
invitational tournaments to win and this year's line-up of teams will put
that reputation to the test again. With 8 of the top 10 ISC ranked teams
in attendance, the tournament title is wide open this year. If the top 8
teams take either of the other 2 teams lightly they may find themselves in a
hole as both Midland Explorers and Pueblo Bandits are quite capable of jumping
up and taking games away from the higher ranked teams.
All ten teams will see
action tomorrow night with the Canadian division kicking things off at 5:00 PM
with
Round Robin games
continue throughout the day on Saturday with the playoff games starting at 9:00
AM on Sunday. Al Doran will be on-site all weekend making regular
updates of all the games.
The latest weather
forecast calls for a fairly good weekend with tempatures
in the low 20's, mainly sunny with a slight
chance of a shower on Saturday.
All in all, it looks to
be an absolutely great weekend of elite fastball action that will feature
probably the most competitive field of teams in the World Sereies
of Fastball history. The tournament title is wide open and whoever
emerges will have had to be at their very best all weekend.
See you at
World Series of Fastball
www.city.orillia.on.ca/worldseries
This year for the round-robin portion of the schedule, the teams will be split into a Canadian division and
an Americandivision. This is a first for the
annual tournament and it will justintensify
the competition. The top three teams from each division willadvance to the playoff round which will begin at 9:00 AM Sunday morning.
The host team of the World Series of Fastball, theOrillia
Quaker River Sharks will enter the tournament as the # 1 ranked team inthe World and the pre-tournament favourite
to become the first Canadian team tocapture the
championship. However, the competition will be very evenlymatched
and there will be no easy games in any teams schedule.
As good as the action is already at the World Seriesof
Fastball, the organizing committee has worked very hard to add even moreexcitement to the weekend. This year, the
tournament will kick off with adouble header on
Thursday, July 12th at
The actual Tournament games will get under way on bothdiamonds at 5:00 PM on Friday,
July 13. Round-robin action willcontinue
throughout Saturday. The playoff round will start at 9:00 AM on
Sunday, with the championship game scheduled to begin at 1:30 PM.
This year, we have been joined by two neworganizations
that will be on hand throughout the weekend. Information Orilliawill be on hand
maintaining the gates throughout the weekend, and the RamaraYouth
Fastball League will be assisting in the set-up of the park, as well asselling 50/50 tickets throughout the weekend. We
will be setting up alarge silent auction within the
merchandise tent with everything from giftcertificates,
to local businesses, to overnight accommodations at variousresorts
throughout
The World Series of Fastball continues to be anexciting,
fun-filled event that the whole family can enjoy. Come on outand watch these exceptional, talented athletes compete

10th Annual
World Series of Fastball
July 13, 14, 15, 2007
With less than 80 hours
to go until the first pitch will be thrownout at the
longest continuously operating major men’s tournament in
All the final planning
is being completed and starting first thing Wednesday morning, an army of
volunteers will move into the park to start the huge job of transforming the
park into the site of one of the top annual major men’s invitational
tournaments. The volunteers have theirwork cut
out for them as they start to install the more than 4,000 feet of temporary
fencing, groom the fields to the caliber required, install all the tents
and trailers that are will be needed, plus everything else that needs to
be set up. Once the games actually start another crew of volunteers makes
sure everything runs smooth throughout the weekend so that the fans and players
have an enjoyable and safe time in
This year, two new local
organizations have joined the tournament to help out. The Ramara Youth Fastball League and Information Orillia will
be on hand throughout the extended weekend helping out in all kinds of
ways. The two groups will also be operating a silent auction in the
merchandise tent throughout the weekend with some really great
prizes. Please make sure to drop in and make your bids on some of the
items. Also, the Orillia & District Fastball League will once again be
operating the large beer tent down the 3rd base line of the main
diamond. This year, Labatt’s breweries have joined the tournamentand we will have a cold supply of their products
available throughout the entire weekend.
