8 hits, 2 runs, 3 K’s

A well played game, enjoyed by a large crowd out early morning to enjoy the fantastic weather and great ball.

Some of the smaller guys on the Twins team got the hits once again proving you do not need to be 6’3 to hit the ball well.

(Patsy’s have one of the biggest teams I have ever seen, fine looking athletes, but IMHO, they are not yet playing up to their billing, ie., they are not playing like a team yet.)

Apparently a rain overnight cleared the humidity we had yesterday so today we have light breezes and reasonable temperatures.

New in the park this morning, much to the delight of many, Roger May and Neil Fennell.

Game MVP: Blair Ezekiel – key hit

The very large and very pro Orillia crowd was into this game. The River Sharks have built up a very strong and vocal following locally and they were all out to cheer on their home town team but it was not to be. Yet another 1 run loss for the River Sharks who played an excellent game but the Heflin team continue to have more lives than a lucky cat, scratching out another surprise win.

As these two teams prepared to take the field to start their game, the host committee took the field and announced a very special award this year for someone who has contributed in many ways to the success of the Annual World Series of Fastball and to the sport. No one was more surpsised than Mr. Darren Zack to receive this special award from the committee.  Darren was the winner of the first MV Pitcher award nine years ago and has won it since, along with being on the winning team in the past and receiving many other awards during this annual tournament. The committee kept this award a secret until the last moment.

Congratulations Darren!  Well deserved.

Nathan Nukunuku hit a home run. Not the biggest hitter on the team but hit a big one with the right part of the bat to take it out of the park.

A close, well played game enjoyed by a large crowd baking under blistering hot sun without a breath of air.

Congratulations to County Materials on another win at Casino Rama. A well earned win, playing great ball all weekend.

MV Player awards went to Nathan Nukunuku of County Materials.

MV Pitcher awards went to Lucas Mata of County Materials.

An award went to Andy Jackson who pitched a great game for Orillia. Andy does not get the ball often in the big tournaments these days, but any team at this tournament would be happy to have him. A great bat in ever game, he loves to get the ball and threw a wonderful game for River Sharks.

Once again, CONGRATULATIONS to COUNTY MATERIALS on your 2006 win of the World Series of Fastball!

Watch for a wrap up soon this coming week from Paul.

Congratulations to Paul and Kathy Barnetson and their wonderful team of volunteers in Orillia for once again delivering a great weekend of ball. Many of the strongest fastball fans in the country turned out for this one and enjoyed every minute of it.

Thanks to the Comfort Inn in Orillia which served as my HQ where their wireless connection enabled us to update the web site on a regular basis.

See you in Kitchener!

Casino Rama World Series of Fastball

Wednesday, July 12, 2006

Orillia, Ontario, Canada

With only hours to go before the first pitch will be thrown at the 9th Annual Casino Rama World Series of Fastball things are starting to take shape at the park.  A full crew of tournament volunteers have just completed the installation of over 3,000 feet of temporary fencing, the installation of the new scorer’s booths and a general park clean-up.  The crew will be back tomorrow morning to continue to set up the diamonds, install tenting, trailers and everything else that is needed for a tournament of this magnitude.

The park in undergoing a complete transformation and all the volunteers can't wait to get the tournament under way.

The park layout has been completely redesigned and for all of our regular visitors you will be pleasantly surprised with the new park layout.  First off the beer tent has been increased in size and moved down the 3rd base of the lower diamond, greatly improving the sightlines to the action on the diamond.  Our signature souvenir tent has been relocated to below the permanent concession building (in the area of the old beer tent) and the large tournament master schedule will be located in the same area.  There will be many other small changes to the normal park layout for this year.

As for getting scores and details out to all the fans that cannot make the trip to Orillia, we will be getting scores out in a few different ways,  First off, Al Doran will be in attendance throughout the weekend and he will be getting results out over his network throughout the weekend.  New for this year we will be scoring games electronically and our plan (provided everything works) is to post a full game report, with play-by-play on the tournament website at www.city.orillia.on.ca/worldseries.

The final bit of news is about the one thing that no tournament director can control but we all wish we could - THE WEATHER.  The latest forecast for the Orillia area is hot, hot, hot with lots of sun.  If you are coming to the park make sure you bring lots of sunscreen and get ready to sit back and watch the most exciting game on the planet, played by the best players in the world.

Things get under way here in Orillia tomorrow night (Thursday) with an exhibition double header between the Orillia River Sharks and a local all-star team.  The games will get under way at 7:00 PM and there is no cost to take in these games.  If you cannot make it out to the game make sure you tune into CTV Sports at around 6:45 PM as Lance Brown will be at the park doing the evening sportscast live on location.  Tournament games will get under way at 4:30 PM on Friday evening with all 10 teams playing during the evening.  Round-robin games will continue throughout Saturday with elimination games getting under way Sunday morning.  The Championship game will start at 1:45 PM on Sunday afternoon with Rogers Cable on-hand to tape and televise the game.

For a complete tournament schedule and much more check out the tournament website at www.city.orillia.on.ca/worldseries.

I look forward to seeing everyone at Kitchener Park in Orillia this weekend
