Boys of summer wrap-up

Monday, July 9, 2007

First of all I would like to thank my son for going with me as usual his help was invaluble to me. A big thanks to Darren Derricks and Dean Kane for inviting Bret and myself to stat this tournament. I had no internet connection so sending games and recap stories did not happen. Next Year we will have to make better arrangements. Probably the best tournament in the USA this year should have been reported better. Karen LeBlanc announced almost all of the games at the Cirle Tap Diamond and did a graet job. Last but not least the Ribeye Steak sandwich was incredible. Sundays recap:

Game 26 A very entertaing game; Circle Tap took the lead in the 2nd on a Tim Jorgenson 2 run HR. Portland tied it up on Rob Gehrke's 2 run 2B. Portland added a run in the 6th on a Kris Wavericks HR. Denmark roars back in the bottom of the 6th on a 3 run triple by Bryan Hansen and a 2 run HR by Kyle Magnusson to take a 7-3 lead. Portland would not take that lying down. Rod Rainey homered followed by 2 singles chasing Matt Bramwell.Colin McKenzie came on and walked the first batter to load the bases. There were 2 outs when Kris Waverick hit his 2nd HR of the game a grand slam to give Portland an 8-7 lead. Circle Tap could not score in the bottom of the 7th.

Game 27 The Farm Tavern 3 Green Bay Townline 2 Green Bay scored on a Nick Shailes Single. Madison came back scoring on a Rob Grey 1B. All in the first. I n the 3rd Stacey McLean drove in run with a 2B. The Farm came back in the bottom of the 3rd on a 2 run single by Colin Abbott.

Game 28 Aspen Interiors 7- Midland Explorers 5.  Aspen opened the scoring in the 2nd on a Matt Lawton 2 run HR. Followed in the 5th by an Andy Jackson 2 run single putting Saskatoon up 4-0. Kyle Beane singled in a run in the top of the 6th. 4-1. Midland took the lead in the top of the 7th ona 2 run hr by Todd Moore and a 2 run HR by Craig Crawford. Midland 5-4. Sasktoon came back to win the game on a 3 run HR by Chad Hansen.

Game 29 Palmm Springs So Cal Bombers 7 Portland 0 Darren Box 3-4 and a walk. 3rbi 's.Evan Potskin 2-3 2 rbi. Mike Butler 2-2 sac. and 2b and rbi.

Game 30 The Farm 8 Aspen Interiors 0 3 run home run by Paul Rosebush was the big blow.

Game 31 The Farm 5 So Cal 1 Madison scored 3 times in the bottom of the 1st on a Colin Abbott 3 run HR. Again in 3rd a sacrifice fly by Colin. and again in the 6th a HR by Jeff Goolagong. SoCal tallied in the 5th on an rbi 2b by Steve Pinocchio.

July 6-8
Denmark, WI

The Circle Tap Fastpitch team had another up and down weekend going
2-2(19-9 overall) and dropping out of our own tournament in the
quarter-finals in heartbreaking fashion two years in a row. The crowds
were very nice Friday and Saturday, weather reached into the 90's and was
very humid and sunny. Full team minus Paul Algar who has yet to be
cleared to play and Darren Derricks still on the DL.

Overall, a very successful weekend with loads of great comments from the
teams that say they look forward to this tournament each year. We try to
get as many top level teams as possible from as many regions so that teams
get to see some new competition and friends that they might see on teams
from out of their area. It's truely an honor to have this many quality
teams want to come back year in and year out and enjoy the big tournament
feel. It has a WT feel as scores from other diamonds are updated over the
PA and hearing the crowd gasp or clap as scores are released.

Here are the CT results:

#8Circle Tap 1 #19Dolan&Murphy(Aurora,IL) 3
CT 1 4 2 6
DM 3 4 0 5
This is the 2nd time in as many tries as Dolan pitcher Juan Pottoluccio
has stuffed the CT offense. However, CT took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd on a
big HR into the trees by Kyle VanAbel. DM came back in the bottom half as
Mike Armitage led off with a walk, Luis Saldana was hit by pitch, Brian
Tobin reached on an error to load the bases, after a K and a fly out Adam
Perkins was hit by a pitch driving in a run and a 1-1 game. Dolan took
the lead in the 3rd as PJ McKinney led off with a base hit, Camden Decker
singled and with two out Brian Tobin smashed a double off the wall scoring
a run but a perfect relay 9-4-2 got Armitage at the plate who had reached
on a fielder's choice. CT made a pitching change in the bottom of the 5th
bringing in Collin McKenzie. PJ McKinney led off with a base hit, after a
pair of strikeouts Saldana hit a routine ball that went through and
allowed a run to score. VanAbel 2x3 HR

The Tappers came to play on Saturday. In the 1st, Kevin Reichardt picked
up a one out base hit, followed by a Chris DeLarwelle double, Frankie
Perez hit into a fielder's choice which allowed a run to score and a 1-0
advantage. In the 2nd Tim Jorgensen hit a solo lead off homer. The
Tappers would tack on 5 more in the 3rd as Perez lead off with a base hit
followed by a Steve Schucker base hit, Tom Crouch reached on a fielder's
choice and Jorgensen drew a walk to load the bases. With two outs Chad
Ferguson walked and drove in a run, Kyle Magnusson reached on an error
that scored a run, Reichardt singled in two more and DeLarwelle knocked in
another on a base hit. Trailing 7-0, Midland got things going with two
out in the 5th as Todd Schultz singled, Craig Crawford doubled him in and
Steve Horning reached on an error bringing in another run.

Circle Tap grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 1st as Kevin Reichardt was hit by a
pitch, stole 2nd moved to 3rd on a Chris DeLarwelle base hit and scored on
a Frankie Perez ground out. The Tappers expanded the lead to 3-0 in the
2nd as Tim Jorgensen picked up a 1 out base hit. With two out Chad
Ferguson singled and Kyle Magnusson picked up a 2RBI base hit. In the top
of the 3rd Quad City evened the game as Siokos led off with a triple,
Willert walked, Schleb picked up a 2RBI double and then Sexton picked up a
one out RBI double. CT regained the lead in the bottom half as Chris
DeLarwelle led off with a base hit and with two out Tom Crouch picked up
an RBI base hit. CT expanded the lead to 5-3 in the 4th as Bryan Hansen
picked up a double, Ferguson sacrificed him over, after a strike out and a
walk DeLarwelle reached on an error driving in a run. The Tappers made it
6-3 in the 5th as Tim Jorgensen picked up a two out double and scored on a
Bryan Hansen base hit.

10AM Sunday

#8Circle Tap 7 #13Portland DeMarini(Portland, OR) 8
PD 8 8 0 2
CT 7 9 0 5
I'd have to say this one was one of the more heart-breaking games in front
of our home crowd, we had the lead, fell behind, exploded for a lead and
then gave it all away. Give a real good Portland credit for an exciting
game for all to see.
CT took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd as Steve Schucker drew a one
out walk and Tim Jorgensen followed with a two run shot. After 3 perfect
innings Portland came alive in the 4th as Brian Ree led off with a base
hit and with two out Todd Garcia singled and Rob Gehrke followed with a
2RBI double off the center field wall. It remained a 2-2 game until the
top of the 6th as Chris Waverick hit a one out solo shot. In the bottom
half the CT offense came unglued. With two out, Jorgensen picked up a base
hit, Tom Crouch and Kyle VanAbel picked up infield hits and then Bryan
Hansen smashed a 3RBI triple down the 3rd base line. Kyle Magnusson then
blasted a two run shot for a 7-3 CT lead. Portland, however, was not
done. With one out Rod Rainey crushed a solo shot making it 7-4.
Following a strike out for out number two, the 9 hitter Reich singles,
Brian Ree singles. Jesse Duncan takes two balls and then a pitching
change is made and McKenzie comes on to pitch. Duncan walks and then
Chris Waverick smashes his 2nd home run of the game, this time a grand
slam for an 8-7 lead. CT would get two runners on with no one out but was
unable to score.
Jorgensen 2x4 HR, Crouch 2x3 2B, Hansen 2x3 3B

The Circle Tap team will now head to Aurora, IL for the AFSA Classic with
an abbreviated team for the weekend. 9PM Fridayand 11 and 1 on Saturday.

2007 Boys of Summer

Thursday, July 5, 2007

July 5, 2007
Denmark, WI

We are on the eve of the 7th edition of the Boys of Summer Open tournament
in Denmark, WI. The local diamonds and bars are awaiting the masses that
will swarm to NE Wisconsin and the small town of Denmark, WI, just outside
of Green Bay. Always very strong crowds of knowledgable fans show up at
this event year in and year out. Diamonds are being prepped with their
final touches to be in top condition to host the finest players fastpitch
has to offer. There will be a refreshment stand on the lower diamond at
the Memorial Park location as well as the building at the upper diamond.
The Circle Tap diamond of course will be a full service bar and menu as
always with a beer garden down the 1st bast line. There will be a DJ in
the bar following the games to keep the crowd excited. I've gotten
e-mails from fans spanning the US and Canada looking to make the trip and
we welcome them all with open arms to NE Wisconsin. Circle Tap has been a
sponsor of men's fastpitch for 13 years and going.

A little added twist this year, with any luck, we'll have some of the
games webcast by Bret Baughman so the fans not making the trip can keep up
with the action as it happens. All scores from all diamonds will be
promptly updated via Al's website by our 3 outstanding scorekeepers.
Weather looks to be 80 and perfect on Friday. Sat and Sun look to be
approaching 90 and clear. Safe travels to all coming to town.
