OPENING CEREMONIES

Brian Ballie led a very brief but classy opening ceremony with a tribute to our good friend Tom (Mac) MacAvoy who is in hospital in New York tonight. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom and his family.

The Swiss Choir sang an excellent rendition of both USA and Canadian national anthems.

Opening pitch by a local gentleman who can still throw some heat (I failed to write down his name). He was wearing his uniform from about 1956 and his glove looked similar vintage but in excellent shape.

A good sized crowd in attendance for opening night.

Some changes around home plate, all new aluminum stands and a new tent over the score keepers table.

GAME 2

JARVIS GAMBLERS VS CIRCLE TAP

Nice (very classy) introductions to the Blue Crew including visiting ISC UIC, Bruce Bierman

A gold mine of experience in the blue on the field. Brian outlined the careers of each, especially Bierman, and I did not add it
up but a lot of years all together.

UIC Peter Klucyznski has assembled a “dream team” of umpires for this tournament. I understand they line up to work this tournament, its known
for the quality of the teams and play and every senior umpire wants the experience of working at this level. Seen here are the blue who work the
ISC world tournament as well as Canadian nationals and world level ISF tournaments. There are umpires from all over Canada assembled, including Bob Henning from BC, Lou Davis from NS, and Serge LaFlemme from QC.

JARVIS GAMBLERS AT CIRCLE TAP

Jarvis:             0.0.0.0.1.0.0.x.x.x.1.2.0

Circle Tap:      0.0.0.1.0.3.X.x.x.x.4.7.0

WP:         Collin McKenzie:     7 IP, 1R, 1ER, 2H, 11K, 6BB

C: Bryan Hansen

LP:   Paul Koert:     6 IP, 4R, 4ER, 7H, 8K, 0BB

For Circle Tap:

Kevin Reichardt had 2 doubles

Chris DeLarwelle had a double

Garvey had a double

Ormsby had a home run.

For Jarvis:

Ryan Thompson had a double and a walk.

The talk of the game was the rain delay of 1 hour and 24 minutes. Actual rain was about 25 minutes and was very hard with lightening all around, which is why the game was called in the first place, before the rain.

Monkton’s crack Grounds Crew went into action quickly once the rain stopped. A lot of work with the rakes and brooms and a number of bags of magic dust (or was it kitty litter?) were worked into soak up the wet and then we were ready to play again. Home plate umpire Bob Henning gave full marks to the Grounds Crew for their quick work and for making the field safe to play on again.

Circle Tap broke the game open in bottom of the 6th with three runs to break the 1-1 tie.

The game was a lot closer than the score would indicate. Jarvis held their own right into the 6th inning

Up until the rain hit, there was a good sized crowd enjoying the game. I give full marks to the hard core fastball fans who stayed and watched the remainder of the second game. The night was actually very pleasant other than the brief period of rain, a few work light jackets but most were in short sleeves and enjoying the evening.

We were able to do a number of inning by inning updates using the BlackBerry, see

The next game with the Farm arrives early.

GAME 6

KITCHENER RIVERSHARK TWINS AT CASA TREJO A-1 BOMBERS

Kitchener:   3.0.0.0.0.2.0.x.x.x.5.10.0

Bombers:    0.0.0.0.0.0.0.x.x.x.0.4.0

WP:              Todd Martin:         7 IP, 0R, 0ER, 4H, 13K, 2BB

C: Pat Shannon

LP:               Lucas Mata:          5.2 IP, 5R, 8H, 5K, 1BB  (LP)

  Marty Grant:                 1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2K

C: Landy Rodriguez

For Kitchener:

Four hits in the first inning Twins pushed across three runs.

Jody Eidt solo HR and went 2/3

Mullaley went 2/3 with a run

Todd Martin threw a 4 hitter with 13 K’s

The crowd knew from the first pitch that Kitchener wanted this one bad. Wolfe led off with a double and although he may have touched the bases he was running so fast it did not appear he was touching the ground.

With 1 out Pat Shannon hit a single and Wolfe was over to 3b.

With Eidt at bat, Wolfe steals home so fast they do not know what hit them.

Ezekiel hits a single. Moves to 2b on a passed ball.

Mullaley singles and Ezekile runs home.

Half an inning and the gauntlet is down, Kitchener lead 3-0 before Bombers get an at bat.

Todd Martin was pumpled for this game and looked unbeatable.

T6 Jody Eidt home run makes it 4-0

Mullaley hit by pitch is moved to 1b. Moves to 2b on a passed ball. Sandford singles and drives in Mullaley.

Marty Grant comes in to pitch for Bombers and appears to be working through the pain in his leg.

A good sized crowd out to enjoy the ball this evening and the weather is great. Nice light breeze.

Monkton in Rain Delay Saturday Morning - UPDATE

Saturday, June 28, 2008

MONKTON, ONTARIO

We are in rain delay this morning.

Right now the plan is for an 11:30am start IF conditions permit.

The teams have been sent back to their hotels.

The umpires have gone for breakfast.

And I am back in the comfort of my suite at the Country Inn in Listowel.

AS OF 10:50AM the rain has stopped and the work on the diamonds has started.  We are looking at a 11:30am start.

There has been some discussion of moving some games, if necessary to a second diamond, possibly in Mitchell, but that may be tonight, or even tomorrow morning. No decision as yet.

Another fantastic tournament run by our good friends in Monkton. A quality event that so many regular fastball fans have on their annual calendars. This year was no disappointment. The ball was great, the hospitality was second to none.

A standing ovation to the world’s fastest grounds crew and the host committee – a BIG WELL DONE!

To my friend Dave:

A very special note: My good friend Dave is in the hospital in Toronto this weekend and I want him to know that all the regular fans
you have sat with for many many years miss you a lot AND wish you well. Your brother delivered your message to me and I want you to
know that it made my day to hear you were following all the action on www.alsfastball.com while in the hospital. Dave, we all want you to
get better soon and get back to the ballyard!  AD

Letter from the Chairman – 2008

Greetings fastball fans!

Once again, a hearty welcome to all who have convened in our wonderful little village for the 2008 edition of the World Fastball Invitational.

If you have visited us in the past you have seen first hand what an amazing event we put together.. For those first timers or anyone considering making the trip to Monkton, I can assure you this… you are in for the very best fastball (and so much more!) jammed into one week-end on the planet!

For each of the last 5 years, I have told myself that come June 1st, I will have composed and forwarded this letter to Andy (Bader) in order to meet our deadlines and printing this wonderful program in which you are reading. Yet my daily rigors (and perhaps a little procrastination) have left me typing this out in the eleventh hour once again. The old adage of how time flies certainly applies here.

Andy you’re an amazing guy and a very important part of the success of this event. We are forever grateful for your time, effort, passion and love of our town, it’s residents and the game of softball itself.

This past year has seen a number of changes within our tournament organizing Executive Committee, and none more important than the appointment of Mr. Kevin Quipp as our President. Kevin is a long-time resident, avid player and fan of the game and is as passionate about the success of this event as we are to have him as our leader. I would also like to thank Tammy Machan, another lifetime resident, fastball player/fan and long-time member of our Committee who is a pillar of this event and comes thru time and time again whenever needed. Huge thanks to you both, and as always to the Committee who once again have worked year-round to create what we know as the premier event on the Senior Mens fastball circuit. Words of thanks and praise go out to all players, teams, owners, managers, umpires, and the hundreds of volunteers who have given so much to ensure that once again Monkton shines for the World.

See you at the park!

Brian Baillie – Chairman
