Softball team splits weekend at Monroe
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – With the regular season just around the corner, the Durham College softball team has shown the coaching staff they're ready to put the necessary work in this year.
Over the weekend in Rochester the Lords played four games at Monroe Community College, with Durham picking up a win during each doubleheader against the NJCAA school. Durham opened with a 5-2 win on Saturday morning with Emma Greer picking up the victory on the mound.
This was Greer's first college game. Her line was 6 IP, 4 K, 3 H and 2 R. At the plate the Lords top hitter was Cassidy Gallant, who had a triple and single.
In their second game of Saturday's doubleheader, Durham was on the losing end of a 2-1 game. Caitlyn Omelanchuk took the loss on the mound after posting 6 K and 4H. The Lords scored their run in the third. After back-to-back singles by Alanna Stonaev and Hope Eagleson, pinch runner Justine Pike scored on Tara Robinson's sac-fly to left.
Over the fifth and sixth innings Durham had a chance to break the game open, but left five runners on base. Monroe scored their go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh on a passed ball, which Durham was unable to bounce back from in the bottom half of the inning.
On Sunday the Lords were back at it with the first game of their doubleheader ending in a lopsided 9-3 victory for Durham College. Returning pitcher Sam MacCallum went six innings, while allowing three runs, six hits, three walks and striking out four batters.
Durham's offence came through a big four-run second inning before adding single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. They added two more in the sixth. Omelanchuk led the team at the plate going 3-for-4.
Their final game of the weekend was a 5-1 loss to the Tribunes. Meg MacDonald pitched four innings, while allowing four runs (three earned), six hits and two walks. She struck out one batter.
The Lords lone run game in the third, although Robinson's bat was hot in the loss as she was 3-for-3 in the game.
Durham College's preseason is now complete as they prepare to start their OCAA campaign on Saturday at Fanshawe College.
This season the Lords will also have a big campaign ahead as they host the CCSA national championship Oct. 9-11 and the OCAA championship Oct. 23-24. Both tournaments will be held at Durham Field.
