Surrey, BC - White Sox continue winning form at World Champs
The New Zealand White Sox started their first game in the second round, championship bracket of the Women’s World Championships with a 6-0 win over 14th seed Great Britain this morning.
Â
Great Britain who had a narrow loss to powerhouse Canada 3-0 in their first round were a key game for the White Sox in their quest for a top 6 placing.
Â
Mikayla Werahiko got the Kiwis off to a flyer hitting a two run double with bases loaded in the bottom of the first to give the White Sox a 2-0 lead.
Â
Werahiko on fire with the bat drove in another run in the third with a double off the centre field wall. Werahiko then advanced to third base on a Katrina Nukunuku hit to shortstop. Mereana Makea executed a perfect suicide squeeze to score Werahiko and give the White Sox a 4 run lead. Kingsley Avery then drove in Nukunuku to go 5 runs up.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth Nukunuku drove in Jennifer Feret to give the White Sox a substantial 6-0 buffer.
Â
Captain Ellie Cooper continued her good hitting form with 2 hits as did Nukunuku and Feret. Veteran Lara Andrew hit 3 for 4 but it was Werahiko that stole the show with her two hits and 3 RBIs.
Â
Taylor-Paige Stewart went from closing pitcher in the previous game against the European champions Italy to starter against Great Britain. Stewart had a great game throwing 6 innings and giving up just 3 hits.
Â
New Zealand’s next game is against Chinese Taipei tomorrow at 7:30am, NZ time.
