Lords walk it off again… and again

OCAA Women’s Softball

Game One: Durham defeated Humber 2-1 (Eight Innings)

Game Two: Durham defeated Humber 6-5 (Nine Innings)

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women’s softball team is making a habit of walk-off wins at home.

The Lords had two more walk-off victories on Thursday night beating the Humber Hawks 2-1 and 6-5, with both games ending in extra innings. Four of five wins at home this season have come in walk-off fashion.

Durham moves into a tie for first place with the St. Clair Saints with matching 7-1 records. The two rivals, who have yet to square off in 2016, are coming off championship seasons with St. Clair winning the CCSA National Championship and Durham winning the OCAA championship.

Game one featured a pitchers-duel with Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) of Durham eventually earning the 2-1 victory. Black allowed five hits and one earned run over eight innings of work. Myranda Pierson also pitched a gem but suffered the loss. She allowed just one earned run off of four hits and two walks. Both pitchers struck out two batters.

The Lords scored the winning run after Humber bobbled a Cassidy Gallant (Bowmanville, Ont.) sacrifice bunt. Melissa McKnight (Brampton, Ont.), who started the inning off at second base, read the play perfectly and managed to score.

Jenna Hillman drove in the game-tying run for Humber with a two-out triple in the sixth inning. She finished with two hits and an RBI.

In game two, the Lords found themselves down in the eighth and ninth innings as Humber scored in the top half of each inning. In the ninth, Sarah Seifried (Drayton, Ont.) hit a one-out double to drive in Caleigh Coels (Duncan, B.C.) to tie the game at 5-5. Katrina Gammie (Guelph, Ont.) then stepped up to the plate and knocked in Seifried for the game-winning run with a single.

Rebecca Ropp (Milverton, Ont.) had the Lords only multi-hit night as she went 2-for-4 with a pair of triples. Bonnie Gillingham and Kaitlyn Pitek had two hits apiece for Humber.

Sara Pesonen (Mississauga, Ont.) pitched 6.2 innings of relief and allowed two earned runs off of six hits for her second career victory.

The two teams will meet again this weekend at Wildwood Park as the Hawks (3-7) host Durham (7-1) on Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Lords make a road trip to Mohawk Sports Park in Hamilton to take on the Mohawk Mountaineers (2-6).
