Ropp and Walters named Durham College athletes of the week
OSHAWA, Ont. - Rebecca Ropp (Milverton, Ont.) and Brittany Walters (Oshawa, Ont.) have been named the Durham College student-athletes of the week presented by Subway.
Walters, a paramedics student, played a key role in the women's basketball team knocking off the Algonquin Thunder 75-59 on Friday night. She scored 10 of her 17 points in the second quarter, which put Durham in the lead after trailing 14-10 through one quarter. Her 17 points neared her career-high of 20 that she scored Nov. 6, 2015 against Loyalist. She also had three rebounds in her 21 minutes on Friday.
Ropp, an early childhood education student, was named the championship MVP over the weekend at the OCAA women's softball championship presented by belairdirect. She was 3-for-4 in the final, helping the Lords win their 18th OCAA title and second straight championship. To open the tournament she was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in Durham's 10-3 win over Fanshawe. In their second game of the opening day she was 1-for-4 against the top-seeded St. Clair Saints, who the Lords beat 8-4 to advance to the final.
Walters and the women's basketball team continue their season on Tuesday night when the team travels to Seneca to face the Sting. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
The Durham College athlete of the week awards are presented by Subway located at 2069 Simcoe Street North in Oshawa.
