Mississauga, ON - - Documentary commemorates 45th anniversary of upset win at Canadian Fastball Championship

July 24, 2017 – For immediate release

This year is the 45th anniversary of one of the most shocking upsets in Canadian men’s fastball championship history as a team from tiny Weyburn, Saskatchewan played the reigning Canadian and World Champions Richmond Hill Dynes, from Ontario.

SPOILER ALERT

Led by a spectacular pitching performance from Pete Landers, one of Canada’s most decorated fastball players ever, the Weyburn Canadians shocked the Dynes 2-0 in front of more than 4,000 fans at Clarke Stadium in Edmonton.

Recently, Blair Setford sat down with Peter and Richmond Hill captain Bobby Smith and listened to the radio broadcast of the game by CFSL from Weyburn who were in Edmonton to cover the game.

Paul Foucault, Sr. originally contacted Blair early this year to say that he had a copy of the radio broadcast and was there something to be figured out to utilize it to commemorate the anniversary of the game.

With Peter on board to sit down and relive the game, fastball veteran Mike O’Hearn reached out to Bobby Smith to secure his involvement. Upon asking, Fred Butt, one of the top pitchers in Ontario in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and his wife Sharon volunteered to host a day of filming in their Hall of Fame basement.

Lance Winn supervised all of the set preparation and manned the camera and audio systems for filming and provided invaluable advice throughout the process.

The result is a trip down memory lane with two legends of the game to reminisce about that unforgettable 1972 Canadian championship, as well as the ISF World Championship in Manilla, Philippines earlier that year and their collective experiences through the rest of the 1970s.
