The term "Hot Stove Panel" was conceived in Canada in 1939 on broadcasts of NHL hockey games when, during intermissions, hockey writers would gather around a "hot stove" to keep warm while discussing hockey.Â
This popular segment of the radio broadcasts made the transition to TV and "Hockey Night in Canada".
It appears that the term may also have been used in baseball circles during the cold winter months between seasons to discuss potential trades and transactions for teams for the up-coming season, hence the term "Hot Stove League".Â
