NL Fastpitch And Softball NL Are Saddened To Learn That Gus Walters Passed Away On Saturday, April 15, 2023.

Augustus (Gus) Walters
 
Gus Walters began his Softball Career in the Civil Service Softball League in 1962 and served on the League Executive for 2-years.
 
Gus was an active member of the Umpires Association for 23-years (1968 to 1990). He served on the Executive Board of the Umpires Association for 16-years in the following roles: President (1970-1971), Scheduler (1973), 2nd Vice-President (1974), 1st Vice-President (1975-1976-1977-1978-1979), Vice-President (1980-1981-1982-1983-1984), Treasurer (1992) and Scheduler (1993).
 
Gus umpired at 4 Canadian National Championships: 1975 - Senior Men's (Oshawa, ON), 1977 - Junior Women's (St. John's, NL), 1978 - Junior Men's (St. John's, NL) and 1979 - Senior Men's (St. John's, NL).
 
Gus served on the Softball NL Board of Director's for 23-years, 13 as Umpire-in-Chief (1975-1985, 1991-1992) and 10 as Avalon Director (1988-1999). In 1991 and 1992, he served as both UIC and Avalon Director.
 
Gus was named Softball NL Board Member of the Year in 1984 and Adult Executive of the Year in 1994.
 
Gus was Inducted into the Softball NL Hall of Fame in 1978 (Umpire Category), the Softball Canada Hall of Fame in 1993 (Builder Category) and was named Honorary Life Member of Softball NL in 1997.

Augustus (Gus) Walters, aged 91 years,  passed peacefully away at St. Clare's Hospital on April 15th, 2023. Predeceased by Margaret, his wife of 68 years, July 2022 and their only child, son, Barry, April 1995.
 
Gus was the last surviving member of the family of the late Patrick and Margaret Walters. Predeceased by his sister: Dot (Wayne), brothers: Bill (Lucy) and Patrick. Father and Mother-in-law: William and Marie Ryan, Sisters and Brothers-in-law: Ethel Hannaford (Richard), Marion Carroll (Bill), Annie Foley (Jack), Tom Ryan (Betty). Niece: Barbara Rodgers (Bob), Nephews: Jerome Walters, Frankie and Tony Ryan.
 
Leaving to mourn Grandsons: Chris Walters (Tanja), Great-Granddaughter: Abigail, Ryan Walters (Shannon) their mother, Robyn Smith, all of Ontario. Grandsons:  Kincaid Bimler (Natalie), Garrett Bimler. Karen and Lorne Bimler, Littleton, Colorado. Sister-in-law: Liz Walters. A large circle of nieces, nephews and friends.
 
Gus was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Softball Hall of Fame, Umpire category, 1978 and the Canadian Softball Hall of Fame, Builder category, 1993.
 
Donations in Gus' memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements entrusted to Caul's Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place Wednesday, April 19th from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will take place from The Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Thursday, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. For those who wish to attend virtually, please see https://www.thebasilica.net/live to view.
