CONTIN HITS 50 STRIKE OUTS
Behind the fine pitching of Jonathan Contin (5-1) , the Pickerel River Cardinals took over sole posession of first place in the league on Monday night at the Rick McDonald Memorial Park in Azilda . The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead after three frames then held on for a 6-3 win and their fifth win of the season against only one defeat . Contin gave up 8 hits , issued one single base on balls and fanned 9 batters to give him 50 in his six outings and an average of 8,25 per game . Gary Lamothe (3-3) suffered his third straight loss of the season going the distance for the Hounds giving up 8 hits ,one single walk and striking out six batters. Curt Hambly hitting 786 as the league's top hitter went 2 for 3 at the plate with teamate Ed Jr Panamick hitting 2 for 4 while Don Bidal hit 2 for 3 in a losing cause for the Hounds
The nightcap under the lights was a high scoring affair . Both teams combined for 16 hits as well as seven fielding errors and 19 runs. Five costly fielding errors by the Parry Island Hawks(4-2) in the final two frames led to their demise .They trailed 8-5 to the Dog House North Stars(2-3) came back to take the 9-8 lead but loss on a thowing error and wild pitch which gave way to two crucial scoring plays from third base. For the North Stars it was a key victory after opening the season in poor fashion . Young sophomore Troy Nootchtai(1-2) went the distance for 4th place North Stars picking up his first mound victory .Troy gave up 12 hits ,issued five walks and fanned 2 batters . Matt Tobobundung (3-0) started for the Hawks and gave way to Al Guenette(1-1) who lost the game in relief . Both Matt and Al combined to give up 6 hits ,issue 7 walks and strike 4 batters . Walter Jr Tobobundung(double) and Craig Brown(double, home run) both led all hitters going 3 for 4 in a losing cause for the Hawks. Joel Belanger ,Troy Nootchtai and Mike Cain (tripple) hit 1 for 2 for the Dog House .
Play resumes on Thursday night at the Lorne Brady Park in Garson . In the opener , the 0-5 Athletics will be looking for their first win of the `season when they take on the slumping 3 and 3 Garson Hounds .In the nightcap under the lights with a starting time of 9 PM , it will be a rematch of Monday's game when the Dog House (2-3) try to even their record when they face the 4 and 2 Parry Island Hawks .
