World Class Softball Hits Rural Ontario
Canada Day will take on a whole meaning in rural Drayton, Ontario, whenthe South Perth All -Stars celebrate Canada’s 142nd birthdayin a much anticipated softball battle with the New Zealand Black Sox. The 7:00p.m. double - header at Kinsmen Park will be followed by a massive fireworks displaywhich will also highlight the Township of Mapleton’s daylong 10th Anniversary celebration ..
The South Perth Fastball League has been in operation since1967 and has set the standard for rural softball consistency in Ontario. The 14 teamleague has boasted as many as 20 teams in recent years and its star studded alumniincludes players like Jody Eidt, Dale Levy, Donnie Scott, Craig Crawford, Rob O’Brien, Jamie Simpson, Dave Bailey and ironically Black Sox catcher PatrickShannon. Patty even toed the rubber for a game during the 2008 SebringvilleSting League Champion season.
The All–Stars will be managed by long time league stalwartDoug Eidt, and as has been the case for many years his coaching partner will beex- Stratford Memorial and Sting pitching ace, Steve Kreuter. The South Perth line-up will include 2008 ISC World Champion,Donnie Scott, on the mound. Scott will share pitching duties with Elmira Expo’sCasey Hallstead and Dan Martin, Shakespeare Falcons Fred Follings and KitchenerCubs Ryan French. Offence will be supplied by Cubs Grant Baechler, Elmira’s Josh Brohman, Bridgeport veterans Jodie Schnarr and RossHerold and Sebringville’s Brian Roote and Chad Crawford.
The Black Sox will bring their power laden lineup whichagain boasts such stars as Shannon, Thomas Makea, Jarrad Martin, Brad Rona,Donnie Hale and Travis Wilson.
The activities get underway at Kinsmen Parkwith player introductions and opening ceremony beginning at 6:45 p.m. Game timeis scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
Admission is only $5.00 per person, children under 12 yearsof age get in free.
