CanadaShuts Out Italy in U16 Youth World Cup Opener
 
(Prague,Czech Republic) – The Canadian Women’s U16 National Team opened the EastonFoundation Youth World Cup by defeating Italy 5-0. Team Canada pitcher Karissa Hovinga (LaVista, Nebraska) held Italy to only three hits over seven innings, and struckout nine batters. Canada took advantage of three Italian errors to score a pairof runs, and was able to manufacture three more to complete the scoring.
 
Thered and white opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, as Kristy Noble (Uxbridge,ON) led off with a double and scored on a throwing error on the very same play.Canada then quickly loaded the bases after consecutive singles by Shannon Davidson (Whitby,ON), Olivia Zwick(Surrey, BC) and ShaniceKetting-Olivier (Surrey, BC) before Jennifer Gilbert (McKinney,Texas) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to push Davidson in to score. Tessa Loewen (Abbotsford,BC) then grounded into a fielder’s choice to push across another Canadian run.
 
Thescore remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Canada added a pair ofextra insurance runs. MirandaCastiglione (Brampton, ON) started things off with a leadoff single andadvanced to second on an error. After a single by Kristy Noble followed by athrowing error put runners on second and third, Olivia Zwick hit a single topush Castiglione in to score, and Noble took advantage of yet another throwingerror to score as well, giving Canada the 5-0 win.
 
Noble,Davidson, Zwick and Ketting Olivier all registered two hits for Canada, whileJennifer Gilbert and Miranda Castiglione each chipped in with a single.

Inother scores at the Easton Foundation Youth World Cup, Puerto Rico opened thetournament with an 8-2 win over the Czech Republic on Sunday night, and Japandefeated South Africa 10-0 earlier this morning.
