CanadaDefeats South Africa at U16 Youth World Cup
(Prague,Czech Republic) – The Canadian Women’s U16 National Team improved its record to2-0 following a 9-0 win in five innings over South Africa this morning. Sevendifferent Canadian players registered hits, while starting pitcher
Shanna Wilson(Peterborough, ON) fired a two-hitter with six strikeouts to earn thewin.
TeamCanada opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first, as
Tessa Loewen (Abbotsford,BC) reached on an error, stole second base, and later scored on a double by
Jaycee Affeldt (Maple Ridge,BC). Affeldt then crossed the plate after two passed balls. The followinginning, Canada kept the pressure on, as
Shannon Davidson (Whitby,ON) led off with a walk, followed by a single by
Shanice Ketting-Olivier(Surrey, BC). After Davidson stole third,
Courtney Kwasnitza(Stonewall, MB) laid down a perfect safety squeeze, with Davidson coming in toscore and Kwasnitza reaching first safely.
Jennifer Gilbert(McKinney, Texas) was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and both TessaLoewen and
Tarah Ettinger(Plainfield, Illinois) hit sacrifice fly balls to give Canada the 5-0 lead.
Canadaadded another run in the third when
Stephanie Gallant (Ajax, ON)led off with a single and scored on a triple to left field by
Kristy Noble (Uxbridge,ON). In the fourth, Jennifer Gilbert started things off with a single, stolesecond and advanced to third before Tarah Ettinger drove her in with a triple.Ettinger then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jaycee Affeldt, increasing Canada’slead to 8-0. The scoring was completed in the fifth when ShaniceKetting-Olivier reached on an error and later scored on a groundout by TessaLoewen.
StephanieGallant led Canada with two hits, while Jaycee Affeldt and Tarah Ettinger bothhad a hit and two runs batted in. Kristy Noble and Courtney Kwasnitza eachadded a hit and an RBI, while Tessa Loewen drove in two runs. Other Canadianhits came off the bats of Jennifer Gilbert and ShaniceKetting-Olivier
OnWednesday, Team Canada (2-0) will face two tough opponents as they will take onthe Dominican Republic (1-1) at 4:00am EDT followed by Japan (3-0) at 10:30amEDT. The official tournament website can be found at

Inother scores at the Easton Foundation Youth World Cup, the Dominican Republicbeat Russia 8-4, Puerto Rico got by China 4-1, and the Czech Republic defeatedthe Netherlands 4-1 in Monday’s later games. Earlier this morning, Italy beatRussia 4-1, Japan shut out both the Dominican Republic 5-0 and Italy 7-0, andthe Netherlands defeated China 6-1.
