Jim Nicol passed
November 12, 2010
Decatur, IL
Al,
I'm very sorry to have to inform you and the Fastpitch World about the passing of Jim Nicol, the longtime face of Decatur fastpitch softball. Jim passed away on the evening of Thursday, November 11, at the age of 89. Jim has been involved in every men's major fastpitch team in Decatur including Riley's, the Decatur A's, ADM and the Decatur Pride. Jim fought these last several years with cancer and has been very ill for the last 6-8 weeks. Jim's wonderful wife Betty, who was also a fixture at the ball park, has cared for Jim at their home day and night with the love and care that can only exist when two people have been together for over 70 years.
Jim's fastpitch career started when he was 13 years old becoming a great fastpitch pitcher and later he was the general manager for all of those great Decatur, Illinois teams. Jim brought me in to manage the Decatur A's in 1978-1980 and later the Decatur Pride from 1993-2001. He definitely was the most influential person in my softball career and was truly a great friend who will be dearly missed.
Jim is survived by his wife Betty, a truly beautiful lady - inside and out - as well as three sons, Jim Jr., Bob and Scott and a daughter Jody, as well as their spouses, grand children and great grand children.
Funeral services are as follows:
Visitation: Sunday, November 14, 2010 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Funeral: Monday, November 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.
Both the visitation and the funeral will be held at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home, 2801 North Monroe Street, Decatur, Illinois 62526
I know you all join me and my wife in sending our most heartfelt condolences to Betty and the entire Nicol family.
Sincerely,
Denny Bruckert
