NIAGARA FALLS -- Ryan Thompson was a single away from hitting for the cycle as the Owen Sound Verge Selects blanked the Ashland (Ohio) Stockpack 9- 0 in five innings on Sunday to win the 2011 Niagara Snappers Shootout Men's fastball tournament.
Frank Lang and Adam Dearborn also homered while Andrew Scott had two singles and a double.
Matt Leahy earned the win, allowing four hits while striking out five.
Owen Sound edged the Elmira Expos 3-1 in the semifinals.
Andy Skelton allowed two hits and two walks while striking out six in four innings. Luke Leahy gave up a run on a walk while striking out four in three innings of relief.
Ben Wideman had a homer and a single while Scott had two singles.
Owen Sound was 3-0 in round-robin play including a 7-0 win over the Lake Simcoe Lightning in five innings.
Luke Leahy allowed two hits and a walk while striking out seven in the win.
Cody Skelton, Brent Thompson and Ryan Thompson all homered in the win.
Owen Sound also edged the Expos 2-1 with Aaron Fraser, Skelton and Scott all doubling. Matt Leahy allowed three hits and a walk while striking out six in the win.
The Selects also beat the K-W Cubs 5-3. Skelton gave up two runs on four hits while striking out seven in three-and-a-third innings. Luke Leahy allowed a run on one hit while striking out three. Matt Leahy got the save by nailing down the final two outs.
