Canada Loses Tight Game to Argentina in ISF Junior Men's World Championship Opener

(Parana, Argentina) The Canadian Junior Men's National Team opened its ISF IX Junior Men's World Championship schedule with a very tight contest against the host team from Argentina, dropping a 1-0 decision despite a strong pitching performance by Canadian starter Michael Lagace-Roote (New Hamburg, ON). The strong Argentinean team played very good defence and held Canada`s bats to four hits as they earned the hard-fought victory.

In the top of the first inning, second batter Michael Lamontagne (St-Charles-de-Bellechasse, QC) reached on an infield single and stole second base, but was left stranded. Canada put another runner on base in the second on a two-out walk, but could not advance the runner any further. In the bottom of the frame, Argentina threatened with a pair of singles but Lagace-Roote induced an unassisted double play to the second baseman to get out of the inning.

In the top of the third, Cole Bolton (Flinton, ON) smacked a one-out triple, but was picked off at third base. Argentina used that momentum in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a single, a stolen base and a pair of passed balls to score the game's first run. Lagace-Roote tried to help his own cause in the fourth with a one-out single, but was erased on a double play to end the inning. After retiring Argentina in order in the bottom of the inning, the red and white was able to get the leadoff runner on base on a hit by pitch in the fifth, but three groundouts failed to score the run.

Lagace-Roote make quick work of Argentina by striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth, and Canada was once again able to put the leadoff batter on base on an infield single by Bolton. After the runner advanced to second on a passed ball with no outs, the next three hitters were unable to bring him to score. Canada got another batter on base on a hit by pitch with one out in the seventh, but the Argentineans were able to retire the two next batters to preserve the 1-0 win.

Lagace-Roote held Argentina to only four hits and two walks, retiring 11 batters on strikes in six innings pitched. At the plate, Canada put plenty of balls in play, but only managed four hits. Bolton led the way with a triple and a single, while Lamontagne and Lagace-Roote had the other hits. Canada got runner on base in each of the seven innings but left five runners stranded.

The win improved Argentina's record to 2-0, while Canada dropped to 0-1. Canada will be looking for its first win when the take on the Czech Republic (0-1) at 2:30pm EDT on Saturday.

Box Score: Canada 0 vs. Argentina 1
