Sue Sherry Passes

July 8, 2013

Kitchener, ON

It is with much sadness that Kitchener Fastball Promotions and the Legends of Fastball committee announce the passing of our long time friend and treasurer Sue Sherry, on Saturday July 6, 2013.

Sue joined the Waterloo Ontario Fastball Association as a volunteer financial assistant in 1996. That year the local fastball organization hosted a very successful Canadian National Championship at Hillside Park, in Waterloo. From that point on Sue was hooked on the great game we all love and it gave her tremendous pleasure and pride to be part of so many great fastball adventures over the next 17 years.

In the late 1990’s Sue became the first treasurer of the Kitchener Fastball Promotions ( KFP ) a group formed to bring the best of the game to our southern Ontario fastball community. She saw the dreams of KPF come true when Kitchener was awarded the 2002 ISC World Tournament. She played an integral part in the bid process and presentation, and worked tirelessly throughout that week when the greatest club tournament in the world came to Kitchener. With the success of the 20002 event Kitchener was awarded both the 2006 and 2007 World’s as well. Through her efforts and those of her KFP partners Kitchener became a regular stop on not only the World Tournament hosting circle, but she was part of the Tri-Nations Cup pre- Beijing Olympic tournament, 3 New Zealand Black Sox tours, a rare Team Canada – New Zealand test series and countless club tournament events in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Sue was a fixture in the ball park for nearly 20 years and her passion for the game touched many of our lives. She was a huge part of the ISC Hall of Fame breakfast over the past 10 years, crafting videos and slide shows for the inductee’s ceremony and working behind the scenes to assist John Thompson in all his Hall of Fame program and Diamond Dirt publications.

Sue was a tremendous resource person and she donated a great deal of her time and efforts to produce print material and host meetings for so many fastball events through the years. She was a great supporter of the Legends of Fastball and acted as the treasurer there for the past 6 years. When I visited her in intensive care on Friday evening before she left us, she was only concerned with a bank deposit for Legends and in getting a donation out to the Children’s Wish Foundation which has always been our charity of choice.

Sue was a great friend, a valuable teammate and someone who gave far more than she ever took back. She worked tirelessly for the game and for the community, and she always came through whether rattled or worn after a long week of work. She was a great friend to so many and leaves behind her son Chris, his wife and daughter and daughter Leah, her husband and newborn daughter. She was so proud to see her granddaughter born just 2 weeks ago, and while failing health prevented her from attending Legends she was able to see her newest grandchild for the first time that weekend.

All of us who new and loved Sue will miss her terribly, but as Duncan Matheson chair of the 2014 ISC put it yesterday, “ Today we have another angel in our outfield ..“

God Bless You Suzy, rest in peace.
