2015 Pan American Games - Women’s Softball Day 2 Summary

USA 7 vs. Brazil 0

The United States came out strong, shutting out Brazil in the top of the first inning and getting on the board in the bottom of the first by scoring on a RBI single to left field by Sierra Romero.  Heading into the second inning, the score was 1-0 in favour of the United States.  The second inning was scoreless for both teams, with no one left on base.  In the third inning Brazil left one runner on base but was still not able to score.  The United States then strung together a couple singles by Raven Chavanne and Janette Takeda and cashed them in on an error and a RBI double to left field by Valerie Arioto.  Later in this half of the inning, the United States scored two more runs on a double by Kellie Fox, making the score 6-0 for the United States heading into the fourth inning.  Brazil was unsuccessful yet again in the top of the fourth inning, while the United States extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth.  Takeda made her way around the bases and was ultimately cashed in on a RBI double by Carda.  Heading into the top of the fifth inning, the United States lead 7-0 over Brazil, needing only three more outs to confirm their second win of the tournament.  The United States finished off Brazil in the top of the fifth with a caught fly ball and two strike-outs.  Sara Nevins of the United States picked up the win with one hit and four strike outs in three innings, while Brazil’s Roseanna Portiolli suffered the loss after only two innings and allowing four hits.

Puerto Rico 11 vs. Dominican Republic 5

Neither team wasted any time in getting on the board in this one!  Puerto Rico started off strong scoring two runs in the top of the first off of back-to-back RBI singles by Sahvanna Jaquish and Karla Claudio. The Dominican Republic then countered with four runs in the bottom of the first by getting a runner on base on an error and stringing together four singles and a walk.   Puerto Rico then pulled ahead in the top of the second with RBI singles by both Claudio and Nicole Osterman.  Heading into the bottom of the second the score was already 6-4 in Puerto Rico’s favour.  The bottom of the second proved unsuccessful for the Dominican Republic, as did the top of the third for the Puerto Ricans.  In the bottom of the third, the Dominican Republic’s Geraldina Feliz managed to get on base with a single to left field, but she was ultimately stranded at the end of the inning.  In the top of the fourth inning, Puerto Rico’s Jaquish connected and put the ball over the fence, extending Puerto Rico’s lead by one more run.  Again, the Dominican Republic was not able to get anything going in the bottom half of the fourth inning, leaving the score 7-4 for Puerto Rico heading into the fifth inning. Both teams were solid defensively in the fifth inning, not allowing any runners on base.  In the first half of the sixth inning, Puerto Rico added another run to their tally with a RBI triple to the fence by Quianna Diaz-Patterson, leaving the Dominican Republic down 8-4 with only two innings left. In the bottom of the sixth, the Dominican Republic again failed to get anything going, while Puerto Rico was able to score three more runs in the top half of the seventh. A RBI single by Diaz-Patterson followed by a double, knocking two runs in, by Jaquish extended Puerto Rico’s lead to 11-4.  A RBI triple by the Dominican Republic’s Danelis Ramirez in the bottom of the seventh added one more run to their score, but unfortunately wasn’t enough to change the outcome. The final score was 11-5 in Puerto Rico’s favour after a full seven innings.

Canada 5 vs. Cuba 0

Both teams went down in order in the first inning.  The Canadians got on the board in the top of the second inning with Megan Timpf knocking in Erika Polidori on a RBI single.  Cuba still wasn’t able to get anything going off of Sara Groenewegen’s pitching in the bottom of the second.  The third inning remained scoreless, with Canada leaving a runner stranded and Cuba not getting anyone on base. The fourth inning started off with Polidori reaching first on a single hit to short stop. She would eventually score on a RBI single.  In the bottom of the fourth inning Canada’s defence forced Cuba to leave a runner on yet again. After four complete innings Canada lead Cuba 2-0.  The top of the fifth was a quick one, with Canada going down in order.  In the bottom half of the inning, Cuba managed their first hit of the game with a triple hit to right field by Leanneyi Gomez, but the runner did not score.  In the top of the sixth Canada extended their lead to 3-0 with another RBI by Timpf.  In the bottom half of the frame Cuba managed to get one runner on but was not able to capitalize on the opportunity.  In the last inning of the game Lye reached first on a single to right field, followed by a two-run homer by Kaleigh Rafter, making the score 5-0 for Canada.  Cuba’s last chance at scoring proved unsuccessful with two strike-outs and a fly ball to right field for the catch. Groenewegen earned the win, pitching all seven innings and striking out 12, while Cuba’s Yilian Tornes suffered the loss after three innings in the circle and allowing six of Canada’s ten hits.
