2015 Pan American Games - Women’s Softball Day 3 Summary

Puerto Rico 3 vs. Cuba 2

The first game of the day remained scoreless in the first inning with each team leaving one runner stranded.  Puerto Rico got on the board at the top of the second with a triple hit by Shemiah Sanchez followed by a sacrifice fly to left field by Dayanira Diaz.  The game remained close with Puerto Rico fending off the Cuban offence until the bottom of the seventh.  Cuba scored at the eleventh hour with a triple hit just inside the centre field fence by Maritza Toledo. She was eventually batted in by Leanneyi Gomez with a sacrifice fly.  With the score tied 1-1 at the end of the seventh, the game went into extra innings with the international tie-breaker rule.  At the top of the eighth inning, Puerto Rico started with Elicia D’Orazio on second base and Quianna Diaz-Patterson at the plate.  Diaz-Patterson pushed a bunt past the infielders to reach one and advance D’Orazio to third.  A sacrifice fly by Sahvanna Jaquish scored D’Orazio to put Puerto Rico ahead 2-1. A bunt by Nicole Osterman later scored Diaz-Patterson, leaving the score 3-1 for Puerto Rico heading into the bottom of the eighth.  Cuba came out in the bottom of the eighth with Yarianna Lopez on second base and Yilian Rodan at the plate. Rodan hit a fly ball for the out, but  Lopez was able to advance on a passed pitch at home plate.  A RBI single by Yuselys Acosta eventually scored Lopez, but the run was not enough and the final score was 3-2 in Puerto Rico’s favour after eight innings.

Brazil 2 vs. Dominican Republic 1

The second game of the day featured Brazil and the Dominican Republic, both with records of 0-2 after the first two days of play.  The game was close in the first five innings of play, with the score remaining 0-0 heading into the top of the sixth.  The Dominican Republic got on the board in the top of the sixth after Eduarda Rocha was safe at first by fielder’s choice and a RBI triple by Karina De Los Santos cashed her in.  Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the score was a tight 1-0 for the Dominican Republic.  The Brazilian offence responded in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back singles and pinch hitter Fernanda Shiroma reaching first to load the bases.  A force out at home plate followed by a caught fly ball at shortstop ended the inning.  Brazil fended off aggressive baserunning at the top of the seventh, going into their last chance at bat and down by one run.  In the bottom half of the seventh, a RBI triple up the third baseline by Gabriela Dos Santos knocked in Mayra Sayumi after she reached on a single, bringing the score to an even 1-1 heading into extra innings.  In the top of the eighth, Geraldina Feliz started on second base with Lidizeth Soto up to bat.  A sacrifice bunt brought Feliz to third, but she was called out on an early leadoff, while Brazil finished off the inning with a fly ball caught in right field. Brazil was no more successful in the bottom of the eighth, bringing the game to the top of the ninth with a 1-1 score.  Brazil made quick work of the Dominican Republic offence in the top of the ninth, with an out at first on a sacrifice bunt followed by a double play.  The Brazilian offence was successful this time around, with Simone Suetsugu starting on second and scoring right away on a hit from Sayumi.  The final score was 2-1 for Brazil after nine full innings of play.

United States 7 vs. Canada 0

Canada was shut out early in the top of the first, with Jen Yee reaching on a walk, but ultimately being left on base.  The United States wasted no time in getting on the board by scoring on a two-run home run by Valerie Arioto in the bottom of the first.  The United States left the first inning with a 3-0 lead over Team Canada after stringing together a pair of singles for their third run.  The second inning proved unsuccessful for both teams despite one hit apiece.  In the top of the third, Yee was able to reach first yet again but a strike-out and a fly ball to shortstop left her stranded once more.  With Jocelyn Cater coming into the circle for Karissa Hovinga the Canadians got out of the third inning unscathed.  In the top of the fourth the American defence managed to shut down the Canadians yet again. The United States extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom half of the inning with Janelle Lindvall being cashed in on a RBI triple to right field by Haylie McCleney.  Two strike-outs by Traina started off the fifth inning, followed by Yee making a solid connection for a single up the middle. Traina managed another strikeout to finish off the top half of the inning and leaving Yee on base.  In the bottom half of the fifth, the United States was able to score Sierra Romero with a RBI single, bringing the score to 5-0.  The top of the sixth was no more successful for the Canadians as two strikeouts and a fly ball to shortstop finished off the top half of the inning.  The United States clinched their win by getting two runners on early with back-to-back singles, and scoring their last run of the game with a solid hit to centre field for a final score of 7-0 for the United States after six complete innings.
