2015 Pan American Games - Women’s Softball Day 6 (Playoff) Summary

Puerto Rico 12 vs. Brazil 2

The first playoff game of the tournament featured Puerto Rico, third after preliminary round play, and Brazil, fourth after preliminary round play.  Brazil got on the board quickly in the top of the first inning, with a lead-off triple to left field by Mayra Sayumi.  She would then score on a RBI single to centre field by Gabriela Dos Santos.  In the bottom of the first, Brazil got out of the inning without Puerto Rico scoring, despite two runners getting on base.  In the top of the second, Barbara Woll put one over the fence for Brazil’s second and last run of the game.  In the bottom half of the frame, Puerto Rico put their first run on the board with a solid single hit by Galis Lozada to bring Aleshia Ocasio home.  Heading into the third inning, the score would be 2-1 in Brazil’s favour.  In the top of the third inning, Brazil would go scoreless, unable to extend their lead.  The Puerto Rican offence came out strong in the bottom half of the frame, scoring two more runs with RBI singles by Karla Claudio and Ocasio, followed by another two runs scoring off a RBI double by Dayanira Diaz.  With Puerto Rico now leading 5-2, they were able to lad the bases.  Back-to-back singles by pinch hitter Shemiah Sanchez and Quianna Diaz-Patterson extended the Puerto Ricans’ lead to 8-2.  Brazil switched pitchers yet again, but was unable to stop the Puerto Rican offence. With a walk to load the bases once more, a groundout to first base scored another run, making the score 9-2 for Puerto Rico.  With a double by Nicole Osterman, the game entered the top of the fourth inning with the score 11-2 for Puerto Rico.  Brazil was unable to respond in the top of the fourth inning, giving Puerto Rico another shot at finishing the game early, needing only one more run to employ the runs ahead rule.  Lozada reached first on an error, while two groundouts allowed her to advance to third base.  A RBI single by Jaquish knocked her in, finishing off the first playoff game of the tournament with a score of 12-2 for Puerto Rico.  Puerto Rico will play on Saturday, July 25th against Canada, with the loser winning bronze and the winner advancing to the gold medal game on Sunday, July 26th.

USA 5 vs. Canada 2

Sara Nevins came out strong in the top of the first inning, striking out two Canadian batters and drawing a groundout to retire Team Canada.  In the bottom of the first, the American squad managed to get two runners on base, followed by a home run by Sierra Romero to get on the board with a 3-0 lead early in the game.  In the top of the second inning, Canada responded with a single by Jenn Salling followed by a solid connection by Erika Polidori to bring her in.  Canada would leave one runner on at the end of the half-inning.  In the bottom of the second the United States would go down in order without any runs scoring, despite runners reaching on a walk and a single up the middle.  The third inning would remain scoreless for both teams, leaving the score 3-1 in the United States’ favour heading into the top of the fourth.  The top of the frame proved unsuccessful for Canada once again, with Polidori reaching first on a bunt but ultimately being left stranded.  The Americans would see a similar fate in the bottom half of the fourth, with two runners being left on base.  In the top of the fifth, Canada got the bats going once again. Megan Timpf would start the inning with a single hit up the middle to get her on base.  A sacrifice bunt by Natalie Wideman would advance Timpf to second.  Jen Yee would then reach first on an intentional walk, followed by a single to put Joey Lye on base as well. With the bases loaded and two out, Kaleigh Rafter put the ball in play for a RBI single, scoring Timpf.  Yee also attempted to score, but was called out at home to end the inning.  The Canadian defence made quick work of the United States in the bottom of the inning, with a double play by Salling keeping runners from advancing to scoring position.  Canada was unable to close the gap in the top of the sixth inning, leaving the score at 3-2 for the United States after their at-bat.  In the bottom of the sixth, the American offence came out strong with a lead-off home run by Kellie Fox.  The United States would later score another on a RBI triple by Kelsey Stewart, extending their lead to 5-2 over the Canadians heading into the seventh inning.  In the top of the seventh, American pitcher Jaclyn Traina shutdown the Canadian offence with two strikeouts and drawing a fly ball to right field to secure the win with a score of 5-2.  Canada will now face Puerto Rico on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the Gold Medal game on Sunday.
