St. Clements, ON - Peter Hallman Memorial Fastpitch Tournament
Peter Hallman Memorial Fastpitch Tournament For years there has been a major men's fastball tournament here in the KW areas...the old CHYMr tournaments in the 70s, then the Twins tournament in both Waterloo's Hillside Park, and Kitchener's Peter Hallman Ball Yard,a few years in Woodstock and now out of town again, this time to St Clements Ball Park in the village of St Clements, a part of Wellesley Township. St Clements and the local fastball fans are looking forward to the tournament. This is really fastpitch country, There is a tournament every weekend this summer at the St Clements ball park. Years ago, there was a softball league in the area called the North Waterloo Rural League. Most of the villages in the county had town teams. The rivalry was intense. St Clements, St Jacobs, St Agatha, Maryhill, Linwood, Bridgeport, Elmira, Conestogo, Baden, New Dundee... It was a fastpitch league and you would find "windmillers" and "orthodox" pitchers, and most famously of all, you were allowed to lead off. That would seem to be unfair, but the pitcher was able to "balk", a right handed pitcher could windup and come across his body with a throw to first catching the runner leaning to second and out... Â Another rule, and I may be a bit hazy on this...but some other old-timers might confirm....any caught tip foul, first strike, second or third was "out" Taking a "city" team to a rural tournament was often too much entertainment. With those rules it took a good leadoff and a "Strong Start" to steal second This year the Peter Hallman Tournament will be played at the St Clements ball park and the community partner that will benefit from the tournament proceeds is "Strong Start to Reading" program. More information regarding Strong Start is attached... www.strongstart.ca See you at the ball park June 24 25 26 in St Clements
