St. John's, NL - Colin Abbott - Newfoundland Legend to be Honoured
The Hill United - Rock Invitational Tournament kicking off at 6:00 pm Thursday June 30 will be a special evening for Colin Abbott, the provinces original fastball hero and the first ever Newfoundland native son to be honoured with induction into the International Softball Congress (ISC) Hall of Fame.
Abbott, a power hitting machine from Portugal Cove, was inducted to the ISC Hall of Fame in 2015 after a long and fruitful career which included many years with the great All-Car Roadrunners and the Farm Tavern, both legendary teams from Wisconsin. His sweet swing from the left side of the plate saw many balls launched over the right field fence at every major ball park in North America. A career .300 plus hitter he was once featured in a major men's magazine, talking hitting, something no other in our sport has ever done. He was a 10 time All-World selection putting him in the class of the top 5 all time in that regard. He also won numerous ISC World Championships with All Car and The Farm despite having to jump on a plane every weekend and travel half way across the country just to showcase his many skills.
Colin was the face of opportunity for every young softball player in Newfoundland in the 1990's and through the 2000's. His success on the field gave hope to a whole generation of future stars and Canada has certainly reaped those rewards 10 fold. He served for over a decade as a member of Canada's National Men's Team and traveled the world competing for Canada at the highest level of international competition.
On Thursday night the fans of Newfoundland and Labrador will get the chance to say "thank you" to the greatest player of his generation. For 3 days the Hill United Rock Invitational will focus on the best players in the province and two of the best club teams in the world, but for a few brief minutes between games Colin Abbott will be back on the field getting his just reward for giving his fans a career full of thrills.
