Alvinston, ON - Indians win at Home


The Alvinston Indians played their final league game against the Melbourne Mile on Thursday night in Alvinston. Young pitchers Taylor Degraw fro Melbourne and Bryan Johnson for Alvinston, toed the rubber for their teams.

Alvinston went up 3-0 early, when Johnson singled to lead off the game in the bottom of the first inning. With two out, Rowan Lam walked, and Ryan Chapman followed with a first pitch 3 run homerun. After a scoreless second inning, Melbourne was able to tie the game at 3 in the top of the third, as they put together 4 hits, to score three runs, as Stocking, Feasey and Roose drove in the runs. In the bottom of the fourth, Alvinston retook the lead. Kole Keating had the big hit for the Indians, as he scored both Chapman and Lam with a triple, and then scored himself on a pass ball.

With the score now 6-3, Alvinston appeared to be in control, however Melbourne had different ideas. In the top of the fifth inning, Melbourne scored three runs of their own on three hits, as Roose, Degraw, and Chisholm drove in the runs to tie the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Shields doubled with one out, and promptly scored when the next hitter Lam doubled, as Alvinston took a 7-6 lead. Alvinston threatened to score more runs, but a strikeout by Degraw ended the inning.

Johnson and the Indians, held the Mile scoreless in the sixth, and that ignited the Alvinston offence. Mark McNally singled to lead off the the inning, and advanced to second after a small Melbourne error. Andy Triest would follow, and Melbourne had their chance to retire him, however a foul ball error gave him a second chance, and Triest scored McNally with a single. Triest would advance to second on an errant outifeld throw, and then to third on a pass ball, before scoring on a Bryan Johnson RBI single. Joe Triest then followed with a single, putting runners on first and second. Shields was the next batter, and he was the first out of the inning, but not before his deep fly ball advanced the runners to second and third. Johnson would score via a wild pitch, and Joe Triest would score on a Rowan Lam RBI single. All-in-all, Alvinston scored four more runs on 5 hits, for a 11-6 lead.

Melbourne threatened in the seventh inning, as they had runners on first and second with one out, but Johnson struck out the next batter, and the third out was recorded on a fly out. Final score was Alvinston 11, Melbourne 6. 8 out of 9 batters for Alvinston recorded at least one hit in the contest. Johnson gutted it out for the complete game win on the mound. With the win, Alvinston improved their record to 13-4 on the season, good for first place in the West Division of the Southwest Middlesex League.
