Points: Ramblers 22 (12 games), Bears 18 (13), Metro 16 (10), United 14(11), Northcote 14 (12), Howick 8 (10), Otahuhu and Marist 6 (10),Roosters 6 (11), Glenora 0 (11).
Women:
Northcote 3 Marist 1, Northcote 7 Waitakere Bears 0, Bears 9 Otahuhu 0,Bears 10 Otahuhu 9 (tiebreaker).
Points: Northcote 20 (12), Bears 18 (14), Marist 14 (11), Howick 4 (10),Otahuhu 2 (11).
Howick and Marist caused major upsets in Auckland men'sfastpitch softball while Northcote cemented top place in the women'ssection with two fine wins.
Struggling Howick beat title contenders Bears 6-1 in frontof its home spectators in a huge reversal of the first round whileUnited, in fine form recently, dropped to Marist 4-1 at home. Wins toRamblers and Metro, winner over close rival Northcote, leave those sidesat the top of the league.
Northcote looked unlikely to be headed again this season, cancelling outthe other contenders with solid batting and excellent fielding. Nationalcaptain Fiona Timu and former White Sox star Jackie Smith celebratedtheir recent national selection with outstanding fielding performances,leaving their opponents no gaps.
Ace pitcher Michal Tangaroa allowed three hits againstMarist, two of them in the infield, and only one, a spinning bunt,against Bears in a dominating display. She is also in the new nationalsquad.
