Toronto team knocks off three-time champion Hill United Chiefs

A pair of Newfoundland softball stars guided the Toronto Gators to the 2016 International Softball Congress tournament championship over the weekend in Moline, Illinois.


 

Shortstop Shane Boland from Goulds hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Gators a 6-3 win over the three-time defending champion Hill United Chiefs.

Toronto went 6-0 in the tournament.

Sean Cleary of Harbour Main pitched the win on a five-hitter. He walked two and struck out 13.

Ryan Boland and Craig Edmunds of St. John’s, and Jeremy O’Reilly from Placentia are also members of the Gators.

Cleary was named the tournament’s most outstanding pitcher and first-team all-star chucker. He was 5-0 with a 0.97 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched.

 


 

Catcher Ryan Boland was named to the second all-star team.

Jason Hill of St. John’s hit a solo home run for the Chiefs. Joining him on the Chiefs were field manager John Hill of St. John’s, Brad Ezekiel of Harbour Main and Stephen Mullaley of Freshwater.

Ezekiel was named a first-team all-star outfielder.
