Lords split season series with Mohawk

OCAA Women's Softball

Game One: Durham defeated Mohawk 8-0

Game Two: Mohawk defeated Durham 4-1

OSHAWA, Ont. - Coming off the heels of a quarter-final appearance at the CCSA national championship, the Durham College women's softball team was back in action Tuesday night and split their doubleheader with the Mohawk Mountaineers.

Durham looked confident in game one shutting out the Mountaineers 8-0 but left eight runners on base in game two losing 4-1.

The Lords (9-7) are two games back of the Fanshawe Falcons (11-5) for fourth place in the OCAA standings. Durham has four games in hand on Conestoga (12-8) and Humber (12-8) who are tied for second place while St. Clair (13-3) sits atop of the conference.

Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) threw a gem in game one as she pitched a complete game shutout allowing only four hits and one walk over seven innings of work.

Durham got off to a great start scoring four runs in the first inning highlighted by a Caleigh Coels (Duncan, B.C.) two-RBI triple. The Lords would add on two more runs in the fourth and sixth innings for the eight run game.

Ashley Wallace (Coldwater, Ont.) had a home run in the sixth inning as she came in to pinch hit for Rebecca Ropp (Milverton, Ont.) who was 2-for-3 with one run scored and an RBI. Sarah Seifred (Drayton, Ont.) and Jaimie Clarke (Elmvale, Ont.) also went 2-for-3 in the win.

In game two, Mohawk pitcher Aimee Leduc shut the door on the Lords offence holding Durham to one run scored while striking out seven.

With the teams tied 1-1 in the sixth, Nikki Grover hit an RBI single to give Mohawk the lead for good.

Durham pitcher Sara Pesonen (Mississauga, Ont.) struck out 10 but allowed four earned runs off of nine hits. Justine Pike (Whitby, Ont.) was the lone Lord with a multi-hit night going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Durham will have two more home doubleheaders this week as they take on Seneca on Thursday and St. Clair on Friday.
