Impactful weekend at the plate garner Weber State’s Sara Hingsberger USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Week honors

OKLAHOMA CITY — After helping lead the Weber State Wildcats to a three-game series sweep of in-state rival Southern Utah, senior first baseman Sara Hingsberger (Eagle, Idaho) has been named the Week 12 USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Week USA Softball announced today.  This marks the first USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week honor for Hingsberger, who was also named the Big Sky Player of the Week for her efforts at the plate.

“Personally, at the plate, my approach hasn't changed,” said Hingsberger. “I just hit to the situation, and focus on putting a good swing on it. As a team, we are getting better and better every game we play. Our offense is hitting as a team, moving the runners and scoring them. We're playing free out there, and just enjoying every second of it. We're fighting our way through pitch-by-pitch, and focusing on the now, rather than the future.”

Hingsberger’s impact was felt throughout the three-game series, starting with a 3-for-4 performance in the series opener.  Crossing the plate twice with two stolen bases in the game, she scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning as the Wildcats earned a 3-2, walk-off win.  In the second game of the series, Hingsberger was 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored as the team clinched a 9-1 (five inning) win.  She continued the momentum in the series finale, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, a double and a home run in a 3-0 shutout win.

“It’s a great accomplishment for Sara,” said Weber State Head Coach Mary Kay Amicone. “She is a tremendous player and person who represents us in a great way.”

On the week, Hingsberger hit .700 (7-for-10) at the plate with five runs scored, three RBI and a 1.100 slugging percentage.

This marks the first USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for Hingsberger and the first for an athlete from Weber State.
