Finals places set for Australian Open Fastpitch Championships
The Victorian men’s team has made it through to the Preliminary Final in the 2007 Australian Open Fastpitch Championships tomorrow.
Victoria who finished third on the competition ladder with 8 points, defeated Queensland in the Minor Semi Final 4-0 played today.
Victoria scored three home runs for the match through Nathan Gill, who scored two, and David Edwards who scored a two run home run.
Victoria meet Western Australia in Preliminary Final tomorrow after Western Australia went down to ACT 1-0 in a tight game.
After leading the competition ladder all championship, ACT has cemented a spot in the Grand Final after defeating Western Australia. The game was dominated by exceptional pitching which held the batters until ACT got a break through in the top of the sixth.
New South Wales finished in fifth place after defeating Northern Territory 12-4 with Jamie Sheehan hitting 3 home runs to secure their placing.
In the women’s competition, Western Australia held onto third position after defeating Tasmania/Northern Territory 14-0. Melissa Robertson scored three runs with pitchers Chermai Clews and Lisa Buswell giving up only two hits for the game.
New South Wales knocked ACT out of finals contention and secured 4th position on the ladder after defeating South Australia 7-1.
New South Wales got some runs on the board due to South Australian errors in the bottom of the fourth innings with Belinda Wright scoring on a fielding error and Natalie Ward on an existing error.
Queensland defeated Tasmania/Northern Territory 8-0 in the last of the round robin matches to remain the top side with only one loss for the championship.
Queensland will play Victoria at 6.00pm (AEST) tonight in the Major Semi Final while Western Australia will take on New South Wales at 8.00pm in the Minor Semi Final with the winner going through to the Preliminary Final which will be played tomorrow at 1.00pm followed by the Grand Final at 7.00pm (AEST).
