The women’s softball team had another 4-2 weekend in week three of their regular season. After a rough Friday evening which saw the Golden Hawks lose a number of leads throughout the game, the Varsity Blues of Toronto managed to steal a win over Laurier 11-8 in game one. The second game was all Toronto, outscoring the Hawks 8-0.

Saturday afternoon the Golden Hawks travelled to Guelph to battle with the Gryphon’s who are fighting for their playoff lives. The offense came out with a bang as Alanna Hentges and Brianna Norlock led the way for Laurier, combining for six hits and four runs, with Norlock picking up the win on the pitching rubber. Laurier jumped out to an early lead and put Guelph out of reach in the fifth inning with five runs for the 12-2 win.

In game two, Guelph struck for an early lead but the offense of the Golden Hawks continued to be too much. In typical fashion, leadoff batter Bobbi-Sue Hentges set the table for Laurier, going 3/4 at the bat, scoring twice and freshmen Megan Harland and Hannah Bedard stamped their mark with the explosive Laurier offence, with Harland going 3/4 and Bedard being 2/3. Laurier sweeped the Gryphon’s on their homecoming weekend with an 8-5 win.

Sunday morning the Golden Hawks finished their second straight six game weekend with a double header against the second place Ryerson Rams. Amy Campagnolo threw a complete game one hitter, striking out 12. Scoreless in the sixth inning, Alanna Hentges belted a line drive triple to left field and with a 3-1 count, Campagnolo struck with a single up the middle to break the zero-zero tie. The Golden Hawks would add one more in the seventh inning when Kathleen Gregus reached base with a hard single and later scored off a pinch hit single from Megan Harland to down the Rams 2-0.

The second game of the double header was a much different affair as both teams found their offensive ways. Campagnolo came in relief of both Norlock and Sydnee Scott and shut the door after being down 6-2 in the fifth inning. Laurier clawed their way back into the game, fed off of key hits and patient at bats from the Golden Hawks. Norlock helped her own cause in the batter’s box for the second day in a row as she was 3/4 and scored twice. Lyndsey Allingham was 2/4 and made key defensive plays for Laurier, keeping the Golden Hawks in the game and giving the offense the chance for a late game comeback. Sonya Carnegie was clutch for Laurier with two key kits with runners in scoring position and stellar base running to lead Laurier to a 12-6 come from behind win.
