Saints sweep Lords to claim top seed at OCAA championship

OCAA Women's Softball

Game One: St. Clair defeated Durham 11-5

Game Two: St. Clair defeated Durham 16-2

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College softball team was left scratching their heads after Saturday's doubleheader as the St. Clair Saints walked away with two huge victories over the Lords.

Nothing seemed to go the Lords way on the day at home as they fell 11-5 and 16-2 at Durham Field.

St. Clair hit everything Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) threw at them in the opening game as she took the loss over seven innings of work, allowing 11 runs (four earned) on 16 hits. She struck out five batters.

On the other side, the Saints' Olivia Elliott allowed five runs on 13 hits and a walk, while striking out five Durham batters. She held an 11-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but even as the Lords seemed to rally she found a way to close the door.

Melissa McKnight (Brampton, Ont.) had the best game at the plate for Durham as she finished 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Megan Lumley was 3-for-4 with four RBI, two home runs and two runs scored.

Emily Hill (Ohsweken, Ont.) took the loss in the second half of the doubleheader. Over five innings she allowed eight runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk.

Sarah Stiller shut down the Lords offence in her complete game outing, allowing only two earned runs on five hits and two walks.

Lumley's bat stayed hot again as she was 5-for-5 with four RBI, five runs scored, a triple and a home run for the Saints. McKnight also had the best outing for Durham again, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Lords can no longer finish first in the OCAA heading into next week's championship and are guaranteed to play the host Humber Hawks in their opening game of the two-day tournament. With one win on Sunday or a loss by Humber the Lords will finish second, claiming home field advantage for the opening game.

First pitch in their doubleheader against the Fanshawe Falcons is 1 p.m. at Durham Field.
