Softballer Bradley Kilpatrick was checking in for a flight to Thailand when he received the best news of his sporting career.

He had been selected to represent Australia at the Softball World Championships at Prince Albert, Canada, in July.

“It was crazy, everything was happening on that day,” the 17-year-old said.

The Revesby pitcher had been spotted at a training camp in Queensland last year and impressed talent scouts at the national softball championships in Blacktown in January.

The Georges River Softball Association player, who has been playing for 14 years, said he had high hopes for the team.

“I think we can do very well,” he said. “Countries like Japan, New Zealand, Argentina and Canada are very strong but we are going for the gold.”

Australia has a strong record in world championships, winning four gold medals in the past as well as a bronze medal in 2012.

The team will leave Australia on June 23.

For his hard work and achievements, Bradley is this week’s Local Sports Stars nominee in the category of Junior Sports Star Individual.

The Local Sports Stars program has four other categories: Junior Sports Stars Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual, Young Sporting Spirit Team and Service to Sport.
