Florida State freshman Sydney Sherrill earns USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Week after dominant week at the plate

OKLAHOMA CITY — After posting multiple-hits in all of Florida State's five games, freshman infielder Sydney Sherrill (Moore, Okla.) has been named the Week 9 USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Week, USA Softball announced today. This marks the first USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week honor for Sherrill and second for Florida State this season as pitcher Kylee Hanson received the honor for her performance in Week 2.

“It means a lot to me to win this award, but I couldn’t do it without my team,” Sherrill said. “This team is so special and we don’t let down easy. My teammates make it so easy to play for them because of how much fun they have and how they love the game."

Following Florida State’s midweek doubleheader against then-No. 18 Louisiana in which Sherrill was 4-for-7 with two RBI, two doubles and a home run, the freshman carried the momentum into their ACC series matchup against Pitt later that week. In the series opener against Pitt, Sherrill’s walk-off, two-RBI double gave the Seminoles a 2-1 victory and extended their ACC-winning streak to 36, the fifth-longest conference winning streak in NCAA history. Despite falling to Pitt, 1-0, in the second game of the ACC series, Sherrill was 3-for-4 and collected two doubles. The Moore, Okla. native contributed to the 8-0 (five inning) series finale win on April 8 by going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Syd,” said Florida State head coach Lonni Alameda. “She’s been working really hard at getting smarter and developing her game. Obviously, these awards are a team effort, but Syd has been a lot of fun and raised the bar for us as a program. Really excited for her and this is a great honor."

Sherrill hit .579 (11-for-19) and recorded six doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, three runs scored and a slugging percentage of 1.211 over the course of the week. She now leads the ACC in five different categories – slugging (.810), RBI (41), hits (54), total bases (102) and doubles (22).
