Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team to conduct Tour of Virginia, April 20-29, 2018

RESTON, Va. – The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) Tour of Virginia will be held between April 20-29, 2018.

“We are excited to be conducting this weeklong Tour of Virginia in 2018 where we will be playing in multiple cities,” said WWAST Executive Director and US Army Retired Veteran, Dennis Wince. “In working with the event organizer and the Virginia Moose Association, I know that this will be a great event. The communities of Virginia have deep ties to the military and I expect they will come out in full force and show strong pride and patriotism for these Wounded Warriors.”

On Saturday, April 21, the WWAST will be playing a doubleheader in Manassas starting at 9:00 a.m. ET, and a single game at 7:30 p.m. ET with all three games played at Valley View Park (11930 Valley View Dr, Nokesville, Va.). The WWAST will then travel to Fredericksburg on Sunday, April 22 for a doubleheader slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. ET at Loriella Park (10910 Leavells Rd. Fredericksburg, VA). The next stop on the tour will take the WWAST to Portsmouth on Tuesday, April 24 for a doubleheader set for 6:00 p.m. ET at Western Branch Park (4437 Portsmouth Blvd, Chesapeake, Va.). The team will then trek to Hopewell on Wednesday, April 25 for a doubleheader at 6:00 p.m. ET at Lakeview Fields (401 Taswell Avenue, Colonial Heights, Va.) . The WWAST moves on to Richmond for a Thursday, April 26 doubleheader beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET at Dorey Park (2999 Darbytown Road, Henrico, Va.). The final stop of the tour will take the WWAST to Bedford on Saturday, April 28 for a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. ET at the Bedford Moose Lodge (Field 1, 2988 West Lynchburg Salem Tpke, Bedford, Va.). The primary sponsors for the WWAST Tour of Virginia will be USA Softball of Virginia and the Virginia Moose Association.

The WWAST is made up of brave men and women, both veterans and active duty soldiers, from all service branches, who have sustained injuries resulting in amputation. Through extensive rehabilitation, they have become competitive athletes again, playing against able-bodied teams in competitive, celebrity, and exhibition games across the country.

In addition to functioning as an outlet for veterans and active duty soldiers to compete athletically, the WWAST uses these cross-country games to raise funds for the WWAST Kids Camp, medical research, and rehabilitation equipment. Now in its fifth year, the WWAST Kids Camp seeks to empower young boys and girls with amputations. The camps are led by WWAST players who work as coaches and mentors, helping teach not just softball skills, but more importantly life skills as well.
