Aces win 8-2 over Appin

The Alvinston Aces hit the road to Appin on Monday night for their first away game of the season. The Aces sent Taylor Degraw to the mound to take on the A’s.

Alvinston got on the board early when Bryan Johnson walked to lead off the top of the first. Johnson then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Rowan Lam then walked to put runners on the corners. Jamie Shields then singled to plate Johnson and advance Lam to third. Aaron Stocking then drove in Lam for the Aces second run of the inning.

The Aces added two more runs in the top of the third inning. Robbie Black walked to lead off and Lam smashed an opposite field homerun to give Alvinston a 4-0 lead.

Alvinston extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning. Andy Triest singled with one out and was followed up by a Johnson line drive double to the gap, which plated Triest all the way from first.

Appin finally figured out Degraw in the bottom of the fifth. Jordan Bray hit a two run homer to get the A’s on the board, making the game 5-2.

After a scoreless sixth Alvinston added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Johnson led off the inning with a walk, promptly stole second and advanced to third after a Lam walk and a passed ball. Shields then walked after a lengthy at bat to load the bases. Cole Pavey was then hit by a pitch to score Johnson from third, Chris Drew followed up with a walk to plate Lam. The Aces closed out the inning when Shields scored on a RBI groundout by Bradley Cooper.

Degraw closed out the game in the seventh to secure the 8-2 win for the Aces, who improved to 4-0.

Degraw pitched well for the Aces recording 11 strikeouts while allowing three hits and two earned runs over seven innings.

Alvinston’s Thursday night game against Highgate has been postponed. The Aces coaching staff is trying to find a team to replace Highgate but as of now there will be no game.

The Aces head to St.Clements this weekend for their second tournament of the young season. Alvinston is scheduled to play three games on Saturday at 9am, 3pm, and 9pm.
