Cancun, Mexico – On May 2, the opening day of the FPS tournament, the USA Softball Men’s National Team (MNT) fell to Telerines, 3-2, but came back in the second game to earn a 7-0 shutout win over CDI, USA Softball announced.

Prior to the start of the game, the team held a moment of silence and etched "DB3" in front of the dugout to remember the life and legacy of former MNT Head Coach, Denny Bruckert, who sadly passed away earlier today.

Game 1: Team USA 2, Telerines 3

Joel Cooley (St. Paul, Minn.) started in the circle for the U.S., but despite allowing a run to take first on a hit-by-pitch, back-to-back strikeouts ensued to bring the Red, White and Blue up to the plate. Yusef Davis (Long Beach, Calif.) drew a walk before he was brought home on a two-run shot by Cam Schiller (Prescott, Ariz.).

Leading 2-0, Cooley and the U.S. defense retired the Telerines lineup through the second, third and fourth innings. Three total U.S. batters reached base through the same three innings, but were unable to put up additional runs.

In the top of the fifth inning, a one-out single placed a runner from Telerines at first but Team USA turned a double play to head back to the plate. Jenner Christiansen (Hayward, Calif.) led off the bottom half of the frame with a single to straight up the middle but a double play and strikeout ended the U.S. chances.

Team USA soon lost their lead after a solo shot in the sixth and a two-run home run in the seventh inning made it 3-2 in favor of Telerines, which sealed their victory after U.S. came up unsuccessful in the seventh.

Cooley took the loss for the U.S., issuing six strikeouts over his seven innings pitched, while Schiller finished 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.

Game 2: Team USA 7, CDI 0 (five innings)

It only took five innings for Team USA to shutout Team CDI, 7-0, in Game 2 of the FPS tournament. Tony Mancha (Las Cruces, N.M.) fanned three straight batters to start the game, while Davis led off with a single to left to start the game.

Despite coming up scoreless through the first, the U.S. kept CDI off the board and came out firing in the second. Tyler Bouley (Champlin, Minn.) drew a walk before Gil Saenz (El Paso, Texas) blasted one out of the park to put the U.S. up, 2-0. As if to signal a change in the offense, Marcus Tan (Union City, Calif.) singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, tagged up to reach third and crossed home on another passed ball to make it 3-0. Davis extended the U.S. lead to 4-0 by hitting a home run of his own before the inning’s end.

In the bottom of the third, Bouley hit Team USA’s third home run of the game to make it 5-0. Mancha continued to work from the circle, retiring the side via strikeouts to bring his total to 11 through four innings.

Schiller scored the final two runs for the Red, White and Blue, hitting his second two-run shot of the day to make it 7-0.

CDI led off the top of the fifth inning with a single but three straight strikeouts from Mancha ultimately sealed the 7-0 shutout victory for the U.S.

Mancha earned the win and ended the game with 14 strikeouts through five innings of work, while Saenz and Schiller led the team with 2 RBI apiece.

The Red, White and Blue return to action Friday, May 3 at 2 and 4 p.m. CT to face Senogrev and MXL, respectively.

Following the FPS Cancun tournament, the U.S. will compete alongside reigning world champions and No. 1 ranked New Zealand in the Jack Grafmeier Memorial Fastpitch Tournament in Kimberly, Wis. May 31-June 2. The team will break briefly before meeting up in Stevens, Pa. for exhibition games June 8-9 prior to the WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic June 13-23.
