Thomson Merchants at Albaugh

The Thomson Merchants completed a disappointing 0-4 record over the weekend at the Liberty Bank/Albaugh Invitational Classic. Against top class opposition the Merchants once again showed an ability to score runs against high caliber pitching but all too easily gave up runs through poor defensive displays.
The opening game of the tournament was between the Merchants and home team Albaugh on Friday night. A gutsy pitching and hitting performance by Steven Manson, including a 2 run home run, highlighted Thomsons performance which sore the game tied at 3 all in the 7th innings. After failing to score in the top half if the innings Drew Motille hit his 2nd home run of the game, with 2 down in the innings to secure the victory for Albaugh.
On Saturday morning Thomson played its worst game of the season to date. A red hot Townline offensive display showed no mercy to Thomson's below par pitching and defense. Despite countering for 1 run in the first innings, and some late consolation runs the Merchants were never in the game and ending up losing 19-3.
Thomson showed more heart in its 2nd game Saturday and held the eventual tournament winners, Mindak, close until the last 2 innings, eventually losing 7-2. Strong pitching by Mindaks Travis Price kept hits at a minimum for Thomson, but a 2 for 3 performance by Casey Eden, and a double by Mike House, followed by 2 sacrifice fly's allowed Thomson to score its runs. Steve Manson was again solid on the mound after coming on in relief in the Townline game.
In the single life elimination game on Sunday defensive errors were again the major difference as Thomson lost to eventual tournament runners up, and close neighbors, Quad City Sox. IN a high scoring game both teams had over 10 hits but Quad Cities power hitting proved to be a massive advantage in the 16-7 result. 2 for 4 performances by Aaron Vail, Eden, and Kevin Anderson were the highlights for Thomson.
The Merchants next play in Eau Claire in 2 weeks time. Our team spirit remains high and we look forward to achieving a higher level of success in the near future. The Merchants also look forward to hopefully adding some players to our roster in the next few days, who will improve us defensively.
