Day 2 of Softball Canada's Senior Men's National Team Selection Camp

(Kitchener, ON) - The 2006 Senior Men's National Team athlete pool gathered again on Saturday, May 20^th, at Peter Hallman Ball Yard in Kitchener, ON, for a second day of modified inter-squad softball games. While offense continued to be a dominating force in Saturday's scheduled events, pitching was not to be ignored.

Game 1

The first of three inter-squad games played in Saturday's windy conditions at Peter Hallman Ball Yard, Kitchener, ON, saw the Grey Team defeat the White Team 6-2.

The Grey squad was led by Rob Gray (Toronto, ON) who went 3 for 3 including a HR & 2B,
driving in 4 of the 6 runs. Rob O’Brien (Elora, ON) added a solo HR while Geoff Evely (St. John’s, NL) contributed 2 singles in as many triples to the plate.

Kevin Schellenberg’s (Squamish, BC) 2B was the only extra base hit off winning pitcher
Nick Underhill (Campbell River, BC). Sean Whitten (Maddox Cove, NL) took the loss for the White Team.

Game 2

The White Squad rallied to beat the Grey Team by a score of 5-3 in the second game of
the afternoon. Tim Macumber’s (Newport, NS) 2 run opposite field blast staked his team to an
early 3 run lead. It was preceded by a pair of doubles, one each from Bill Simmons (Smithville, ON) and Keith Mackintosh (Saskatoon, SK).

Jeff Ellsworth (Alberton, PEI) hit a 1st inning HR for the Grey Team while Scott Newitt
(Delta, BC) chipped in with a 2B.

Andrew Phibbs (Jarvis, ON) struck out 4 in picking up the win. Rob O’Brien (Elora, ON)
took the loss.

Game 3

The White Team claimed victory in the final match of the day, defeating the Grey Team 7-2.

Kevin Schellenberg (Squamish, BC) and Dale Levy (St. Mary’s, ON) were the offensive stars for the White Team, each going for 2 for 2 with a HR. Ian Fehrman (Townsend, ON) chipped in with 2 singles.

Singles by Scott Newitt (Delta, BC) and Derek Mayson (North Vancouver, BC) were the only hits off winning pitcher Trevor Ethier (Saskatoon, SK). Paul Koert (Stouffville, ON) was charged with the loss for the Grey Team.

Weather permitting the 2006 Senior Men's National Team athlete pool will compete on Sunday with 2 more inter-squad games at Peter Hallman Ball Yard in Kitchener, ON.
