Sparvier blasts Sask. past Elmira in extra inning upset

SUMMERSIDE - The Saskatchewan Junior Diamondbacks can thank the bats of Barry Sparvier and Matt King for an upset 5-4 extra inning win over the Ontario Two reps Elmira Advance Millwright Tuesday afternoon here.
Sparvier hit a two run blast in the second inning to put the Saskatoon-based team a 2-1 lead, before hitting a second, two-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh with his team down 4-2 to tie it up and force the extra inning.
King came to bat with one out and Codie Gross on third base as a result of the international tiebreaking rule that places the last out on second base. He hit an 0-1 pitch to right field and Gross tagged up, just beating the throw from Elmira right fielder Ron Dean to catcher Travis Martin for the 5-4 upset win.
Jack McLaren (2-3) had the bulk of Elmira’s offense, hitting a two run home run of his own. Tim Freeman (1-2, RBI, caught stealing) and Josh Brohman (1-4, run scored) also contributed.
The D’Backs had an earlier home run stolen when Geoff Martin made a beautiful catch right at the fence off Kyle Hyrcuik.
Brady Woods earned the win, going three and two third innings in relief walking two and striking out three. Hyrcuik went four and one third inning allowing four runs on four hits, walking four and sitting down four.
Dan Martin took the loss going seven and two-third innings, allowing five runs on four hits, walking one and striking out three.


QUEBEC DROPS N.B. 

SUMMERSIDE
- Saint Leonard D’Aston Express of Quebec scored six runs in the third inning en route to an 11-4 mercy rule defeat of New Brunswick’s Miramichi Vics in a battle winless teams.
After a good start, New Brunswick’s bats fell silent and Quebec’s caught fire.
Charles Hebert (3-4, two runs scored, two run home run), Jean Daniel Doucet (2-4, two runs scored, RBI, stolen base), Miguel Mottard (3-3, two runs scored, RBI) and Nicholas Morin (1-2, run scored).
Robbie Layton (2-3) had the big bat for the Vics, slamming out solo and two run home runs to account for three of the team’s four runs. Shane Benjamin (1-3, two runs scored, stolen base) and Scott Stennick (1-3) also had good at bats.
Matt Greer went six innings, striking out seven, allowing four runs on six hits and walking one to earn the win.
Benjamin suffered the loss going two and two third innings allowing seven runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out one. Brandon Gorman went three innings in relief, allowing four runs and sititng down one.
Quebec moved to 1-3 with the win while the Vics fell to 0-4


East Hants blanks Simcoe at Jr Men's

- Nova Scotia ace Cory Avery pitched a complete game four hitter, striking out eight as East Hants blanked Simcoe Wildcats (Ontario 3) 5-0 on field 2 here.
Avery (1-3, RBI), Laurie Isenor (1-2, two runs scored, two run home run), Andy Chase (2-2, three runs scored) and John Gunn (1-2, RBI).led the N.S. offensive output.
Jeff Bassindale (2-3, double) was the top batter for Simcoe.
Kevin Buckley suffered the loss going three innings, allowing four runs on seven hits.
East Hants improves to 2-3 with the win while Simcoe drops to 2-3 (won-loss).


P.E.I. hurler throws gem
Putham pitches gem as Wolverines win 
SUMMERSIDE -
 Andrew Putham was solid on the slab and at the plate, pitching a complete game one hitter fanning 13 batters to earn the win in the process as the Wolverines (Ont. 1) pasted Nova Scotia representative East Hants Henchmen 8-0.
Scarborough scored once in the first, two times in the third and added three more in the fifth inning in the rout.
Putham (2-4) also had the hot bat, hitting a solo home run, scoring twice and driving in four other runs in the win. Nick Dambrosio (3-5, RBI, double, two runs scored), Dale Broadway (2-3, run scored) and Brandon Horn (3-5, two runs scored, stolen base) also led the attack.
Pat Stewart had the lone Henchmen hit off
Steve Thomas pitched the complete game, giving up 14 hits in the process walking three and striking out two, in taking the loss.

 
SUMMERSIDE - John Veinott threw a five-inning, three-hitter, fanning five and Jeremy McKinnon hit a deep two-run home run to center field as the host P.E.I. Source for Sports Twins dropped the Simcoe Wildcats 8-0 on day three of the 2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada Junior Men’s fast pitch championships.
P.E.I. got things going early battering Simcoe starter Scott Marshall for five runs over one inning and two batters to take an early 3-0 lead.
Donnelly Archibald (1-4, RBI double), Colin Dillon (2-2, RBI double), Alex MacDonald (1-2, RBII double), Matt Dawson (2-2, run scored) and Devon Praught (1-3, run scored, RBI) was also tops.
Will Fehrman (1-2), Nathan Fuller (1-2) and Jeff Bassindale (1-1) were the offensive spark for the Wildcats.
Scott Marshall took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits, fanning one. Chris Kett went three innings allowing three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out one. Kevin Buckley pitched an inning to finish off.
 

Jr D'Backs upset Scarborough 
SUMMERSIDE
- After making an error in the top of the seventh that allowed Scarborough Wolverines (Ont 1) to cash in the tying run and make it 1-1, Colby Bierle used his ball smarts and speed to race from first base all the way home to score the winning run in a 2-1 upset win over the previously undefeated Wolverines.
Earl Ghostkeeper (2-3) drove home pinch runner Codie Gross with the game’s first run.
The Wolverines countered in the top of the seventh when Ryan Jaynes brought home Brad Fogal when Bierle fumbled the ball to allow the game to tie.
When he had the chance to make amends for his mistake, Bierle (1-4) put it into high gear.
"When I the coach waving me that just made me beared down even more and run that much harder," Bierle said after the thrilling win
Barry Sparvier, whose two home runs and three RBI keyed an earlier 5-4 win over Elmira Advance Millwright Tuesday afternoon, was thrilled to get this win over their rivals from Scarborough.
"Every year we’ve played they have beaten us in the five years I have played Junior AAA ball," he said. "I was jacked for this game. Everybody was."
However, Sparvier knows the Diamondbacks will need to enjoy this tonight and regroup Wednesday morning for another big game, this one against the Newfoundland and Labrador Kelly’s Pub Canadians.
"We can’t stay too high for long as we still have to show up tomorrow," he said.
Brady Woods allowed just four hits and fanned five batters in picking up the win. He credited his team with the win.
"Today was the game of my life," he said about the upset win.
Andrew Putham (2-3), Jaynes (1-3, RBI) and Dale Broadway (1-3) were the batters to get hits for the Wolverines.
Matt Leahy wasn’t as dominant as he had in previous outings, going six and two third innings allowing 10 hits, walking one and striking out six.

NL BLAST PEI; REMAIN PERFECT AT 4-0 

SUMMERSIDE
- Jason Hill threw a four hitter, seven strikeout gem and Ryan Boland was 2-fo-r3 at the dish to lead Kelly’s Pub Canadians (NL) to an 11-1 mercy rule win to remain undefeated here.
Mark Lewis(1-3, run scored, two RBI), Nrad Ezekiel (1-2, two runs scored, double, RBI), and Sheldon Keough (1-3, two RBI, run scored) were the top hitters.
Darcy Lapierre (2-2, RBI) was the top P.E.I. hitter.
Donnelly Archibald suffered the loss going three and two third innings allowing 10 runs on five hits - seven earned - walking six and fanning five. Neil Arnold gave up one run on two hits walking three.
The defending champion NL squad went to 4-0, and the only team undefeated at this point while P.E.I. fell to 2-2 with the loss.
Injured Canadian Justin Gill, out with a brioken jaw, was in attendance watching his team from the bench.
