Day 3 of Softball Canada's Senior Men's National Team Selection Camp

(Kitchener, ON) - Softball Canada closed their Senior Men's Evaluation Camp on Sunday May 21st, 2006 with one final inter-squad game at Peter Hallman Ball Yard in Kitchener, Ontario.  Cold temperatures and high winds limited the day's activities to only one six inning inter-squad game.

While hitting was the force of Friday and Saturday, pitching took center stage on Sunday.  The pitchers dueled to a 1-1 tie as the game was called following the 6th inning due to weather.

The White team scored their run early as Bill Simmons (Smithville, ON) led off the bottom of the 1st inning with an infield single and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jody Eidt (Mitchell, ON).

The Grey Team replied in the top of the 3rd inning when Trevor Johnstone (Sicamous, BC) led off with a triple. Scott Newitt (Delta, BC) followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Johnstone.  Newitt was robbed of a hit in his next trip to the plate as shortstop Ian Fehrman (Townsend, ON) made a nice diving stab at his hard line drive.

Eidt and Fehrman each singled to round out the hits for the White Team.

Keith Mackintosh (Saskatoon, SK) led the Grey Team with two singles. Chris Shewfelt (St. Catherines, ON) had the remaining Grey Team hit, a single in the 4th inning.

Gerald Muizelaar (Shubenacadie, NS) and Sean Whitten (Maddox Cove, NL) each took to the circle for the Grey Team, combining to strike out 8 batters while Rick Smith (Duncan, BC) and Andrew Phibbs (Jarvis, ON) got the call for the White Team. Smith struck out 5 in his three innings of work and Phibbs pitched three scoreless innings to finish up the cause.

The Senior Men's National Team Coaching staff will come together again at the International Softball Congress Championships in early August to finalize their evaluations and string together a final roster. These players will then compete at the VII Pan American Championships in Hermosillo, Mexico from September 29th to October 9th.
