Jarvis Gamblers @ Owen Sound Volkswagen Junior Selects

The Jarvis Gamblers were in Owen Sound for a pair of ISC Eastern Canada Travel League doubleheaders at Duncan McLellan Park against the Volkswagen Junior Selects over the weekend.
On Saturday, Jarvis scored two victories, winning 5-1 & 7-3.  (League Games 20 and 21)


On Sunday, the Gamblers came through with 2 more victories, winning the opener 5-1 and then following with a 3-0 triumph over the VW Junior Selects.

In the bottom of the first inning, Bill Simmons scratched out a shallow double, stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Staats to open the scoring.
The Volkswagen Junior Selects tied it in the top of the second when third baseman Matt Kuhl launched a solo home run to right-center.
In the bottom of the second, Jarvis pulled away. First baseman Greg Courneyea doubled & scored on an rbi single by D.P. Andrew Phibbs.
Jarvis proceeded to load the bases and scored another run on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Ryan Thompson.
In the bottom of the 4th, Thompson drilled a 2 run homer for the Gamblers to close out the scoring at 5-1.
Veteran lefthander Paul Koert got the win for Jarvis, giving up 5 hits and striking out 8 over 7 innings.
Andrew Scott, still dealing with a sore hamstring, took the loss for Owen Sound. Over 6 innings, Scott gave up 9 hits and struck out 3.

In the top of the first, the Volkswagen Junior Selects loaded the bases with two hits off Andrew Phibbs and an interference call on  shortstop Ryan Thompson.
Phibbs escaped the jam and proceeded to retire the next 17 batters, before yielding a walk.
Overall, Phibbs was touched for the two hits to lead off the game in pitching the shutout.
The only run Jarvis would need, came in the bottom of the first when second baseman Chad Staats blasted a 2 out home run.
In the bottom of the 4th, Jarvis loaded the bases and catcher Greg Courneyea scored on a wild pitch from third.
In the bottom of the 5th, Staats singled, went to second on a passed ball and then scored on an rbi single by Pat Graham to close out the scoring.
Lefthander Dustin Veenhof took the loss for Owen Sound. Veenhof was touched for 6 hits over 6 innings and supported on several occasions by solid defence.
Nolan Kreis came on to pitch the 7th for the Selects and gave up a walk in his stint.
The Selects have a significant Bluewater game on Wednesday when they tavel to Port Elgin to face the Blue Devils at 8:30 pm at Lakeview Park in Port Elgin
