Volkswagen Juniors & Elmwood Smoke split Bluewater doubleheader

Volkswagen Junior Selects & Elmwood Smoke split

The Elmwood Cameron Funeral Home Smoke & the Brick Brothers Volkswagen Junior Selects split their doubleheader.
The Smoke won the opener 6-0, while the Junior Selects rallied to win the second game 3-1.

In the top of ht 2nd, Elmwood first baseman Steve Patterson launched a solo home run to put the Smoke on the board.
Elmwood put the game away with a 4 run 4th inning,
 
Catcher Bryn Maus had a 2 run double to make it 3-0 and through a sequence of errors and grounders, Maus came in to make it 4-0.
 
Patterson picked up his second rbi of the game later in the inning to stake the Cameron Funeral Home to a 5-0 lead.
 
In the 5th, shortstop Jason Fischer singled, moved to third on a grounder and a fielder's choice and then scored when a crazy infield bounce handcuffed the Selects shortstop Brent Thompson.
 
Leading 6-0, Leftfielder Jon Wilken preserved the shutout with an exceptional running catch on Luke Lind.
 
Andy Ahrens went all the way for Elmwood, posting a 3 hit shutout & striking out 4.
 
Nolan Kreis took the loss for Owen Sound, giving up 9 hits over 4 & 2/3rds innings. While Kreis was tapped for a number of hits, he was truly done in by the Selects defense as they made 5 errors in the game.
 
Jamie Elder, a call up from the Volkswagen Midgets, gave up 2 hits but no runs against in a stint that lasted 2 & 1/3rd innings

Elmwood opened the scoring in the 4th when second baseman Jordan Lang singled, moved to second on an infield out and then scored on an rbi single by Steve Patterson, his third rbi of the evening.
 
Again in leftfield, Wilken made two more exceptional catches, one while falling due to slick grass underfoot.
The Volkswagen squad rallied in the bottom of the 6th to score the victory.
 
First baseman Chris Fyvie opened with a double and moved to third on a shallow single by Tyler Baumber.
 
Both Fyvie and Baumber, who had a terrific night for the Selects, scored when third baseman Matt Kuhl drilled a triple to the base of the outfield fence.
 
Catcher Jay Miller squeezed Kuhl home for the insurance run.
 
David Juniper got the win for Brick Brothers Volkswagen going all the way with a 5 hit performance.
Brady Lantz took the loss for Elmwood, giving up 7 hits over his 6 inning stint.
 
The Brick Brothers Volkswagen Selects are competing this weekend at Toanche & Lafontaine at the Ontario Junior Elimination tournament.
 
Their first game is Friday at 5 pm against the Kitchener Predators.
