Nova Scotia is off to a 1-0 start as they began play Sunday morning at the 2008 Canadian Midget Boys Fastpitch nationals here in Brantford, Ont., earning a 4-2 win over Quebec.
In a game that saw N.S. scatter hits throughout the game and no one player dominate, the visitors for the game scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings and held off a worrisome bottom of the seventh inning. Quebec got two runners on with one out, before reliever Rene D'Entremont of Guysborough, pitching in his third inning off relief of starter Justin Schofield of White Rock, retired the last two batters to earn the save. Schofield threw four innings of shutout ball.
Trent MacDonald of Arisaig led the team at the dish, going 1-for-3 with an RBI triple and scoring a run while Darcy Gillis of Lantz went 1-for-1 with a two run single.
Sunday afternoon, N.S., coached by Jeff Fraser of Nine Mile River, was set to face Kingston, Ont., Kobras.
The Bluenosers are the lone Maritime entry and along with Newfoundland and Labrador make up just two entries from Atlantic Canada at the event.

Nova Scotia won and lost in their opening two games beating Quebec 4-2 before losing 6-2 to Kingston, Ont., as they began play Sunday at the 2008 Canadian Midget Boys Fastpitch nationals here in Brantford, Ont.
In their first game, N.S. scored twice each  in the fifth and sixth innings and held off a Quebec threat in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Quebec put two runners on with one out, before reliever Rene D'Entremont of Guysborough, pitching in his third inning off relief of starter Justin Schofield of White Rock, retired the last two batters to earn the save. Schofield threw four innings of shutout ball.
Shortstop Trent MacDonald of Arisaig led the team at the dish, going 1-for-3 with an RBI triple and scoring a run while catcher Darcy Gillis of Lantz went 1-for-1 with a two run single. Matt Anthony of Shubenacadie was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Against Kingston, the Jeff Fraser-coached squad squandered four first inning runs to a powerful lineup and couldn't get back in it, falling in seven innings after it looked like it was going to be a rout in five early on.
N.S. was led by Schofield and Patrick Avery who each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Schofield drove home one of his teams runs while Avery scored one.
Avery, of Guysborough, took the loss on the slab giving up six runs in two and one third innings before being replaced by Kody Blois. The Belnan native shut down Kingston the rest of the way, pitching four innings of scoreless ball.
The team will regroup for a light day Monday with just one game on the tab, a 2 p.m. AST contest with Napanee Express.
Tuesday will be their busiest with three games scheduled (according to the tpournament website at http://www.2008midgetboys.ca/teams.asp?id=NS) including a 11 a.m. AST game with the only other Atlantic Canadian team at the event, Newfoundland and Labrador; 5 p.m. with the Saskatoon Aspen Selects and a 9 pm rematch with Quebec.
